Mail on mac, links from messages open a new empty chrome browser page

Reported by foliene...@gmail.com, Dec 14 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_13_1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/62.0.3202.94 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
all

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. open mail and chose a message with a link
2. click on link
3. a brand new browser with an empty page (default landing page) opens

What is the expected behavior?
it should open the link that is clicked

What went wrong?
it doesn't follow the link that is clicked and just opens a brand new browser page at default (pexels app) landing page like if you open chrome for the first time with nothing from the message

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes ?

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 62.0.3202.94 Channel: n/a
OS Version: OS X 10.13.1
Flash Version:

you have to copy link and past in browser page for it to work
Components: -Blink UI>Browser>NewTabPage
This appears to work fine for me. I configured the Mail app with a gmail account. Could it be the type of email account you have? If you switch your default browser to Firefox or Safari does it work ok?
