Chrome feature request: Control Profile data size when using Roaming Profile

Project Member Reported by skomiya@chromium.org, Dec 13 2017

Issue description

Summary: Being able to control Profile data size when using Roaming Profile

Use case / Motivation:
- Policy to set max size for the Profile data size.
- Policy to select what data should be kept in the Profile data size. (enable/disable feature to only save the minimum data)

Customer is using Citrix Xen Desktop/XenApp and Roaming profiles and wishes to keep the user profile size less than 85MB.
e.g. "BrowserMetrics-active.pma" and "BrowserMetrics-spare.pma" are too large and cannot be set to "\Administrative Templates\System\User Profiles\Exclude directories in roaming profile" Windows policy.

The issue is affecting around 256 users and they have been searching for any reasonable workarounds or features for over 5 years.
Currently they remove some data manually and sometimes it corrupts the Profile data.
Additionally, to avoid unmanaged increase in Data size, they test how much the data size increases before each Chrome update.
This can take a while and all Chrome updates are deployed with at least 1 month.

Existing workarounds:
Remove manually some files or history data.

Case#: 14282514

I think this request is more about cleaning up unnecessary data from users profile than limiting its size. The profile works in the way it has to store the data, I'm not sure how it can be limited. There is no 'minimum data' threshold that can be enabled to persist in profile.

To have the profile space as low as possible the customer can use GPO like 'SavingBrowserHistoryDisabled', 'DiskCacheSize', limiting number of extensions allowed for users or having the history automatically deleted when user closes the browser. "Automatically send usage statistics" option can also be disabled to avoid gathering such stats.

Does all that work for the customer?
