Headphone jack audio volume way too low, reboot fixes it for awhile, then happens again

Reported by wpwoo...@gmail.com, Dec 11 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 9901.77.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/62.0.3202.97 Safari/537.36
Platform: 9901.77.0 (Official Build) stable-channel caroline

Example URL:
Any URL with audio

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Reboot, use headphones for example at Youtube
2. Unplug headphones, do other stuff, go into standby
3. Try to use headphones again

What is the expected behavior?
Headphone volume should be at appropriate level matching level after a reboot

What went wrong?
Headphone volume is very low or even silent, even with Chrome volume control at full volume

Did this work before? Yes Chrome 61?

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Another Reddit thread on this issue. The OP returned his Chromebook Pro because of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos/comments/7geyw4/new_cromebook_pro_and_sound_issues/

I am having the same exact problem with my brand new Asus C302. The headphone volume is too low, so I do a powerwash, it works for a bit and then it goes back to being way too low. I've come to find this happen automatically if I plug in the USB dongle for my Audio Engine speakers. I've had to reboot the laptop four or five times in the last two weeks. So now I'm sending it back to Asus to get fixed.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with my Samsung Chromebook Pro. In my case, a hardware reset fixes the problem for a while. But before too long, the earphone volume becomes low again. The fact that this problem manifests on Chromebooks from different manufacturers leads me to suspect that this is a software problem, rather than a hardware problem.

#6 I think its a Chrome 62 regression as the issue only recently started to be reported.
I am having this same issue on my Asus C302 M5. Headphone jack output is WAY TOO LOW.

Hello. I am having the same problem also with Samsung Chromebook Pro. A hardware reset only fix temporary the problem. After one or 2 days i have to do it again because the problem is back. Thank you in advance for your help.

Running version 62.0.3202.97 (Official Build) (64-bit) on an AUSUS C302 and the volume is really low when used through the headphone jack. Resetting or rebooting makes no difference.

Looks like issue 769446 .
Can you update to M63 and check again?

Comment 14 by wpwoo...@gmail.com, Jan 11 2018

#13, cannot reproduce on Caroline M63 given steps in original post and in issue 769446 . Looks like its fixed!! :)

Comment 15 by wpwoo...@gmail.com, Jan 11 2018

Not related to this bug, but I noticed while testing Caroline that the headphone volume change between 1/2 and full volume is far greater than between 0 an 1/2 volume. Even more so on Eve, the Pixelbook. As it is now, 1/2 volume is quite low.

Seems like the volume curve for headphones could be improved so that 1/2 volume is louder.

Hi Jongpil and Woojoo, please consider adjusting the volume table for headphone on caroline.

Thanks!

#17 please look at Eve too (Pixelbook)
