shrike@ the toolbar in Cocoa is showing as a constant 242/255 white (per Digital Color Meter) to me no matter what background it's on. Do you know if this is dependent on a setting?

The toolbar and tabs are a constant color (though that color changes depending on foreground/background status of the window). The translucent part is the area above/behind the tabs. It's an NSVisualEffectView with a mostly opaque layer over it to give a hint of what's behind the window.

Sadly (I think) the translucent background is not part of the GM2 spec (at least last time I read it). So this is potentially work that need not be done.

Unfortunately there isn't. Supporting this would require some changes to Views, the UI framework used in the redesign. We discussed it a bunch and ended up not putting in the time to do it before the launch. Implementing it in the future isn't out of the question.
