HTML select option is unreadable when disabled and selected

Reported by janosch....@gmail.com, Dec 5 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Ubuntu Chromium/62.0.3202.94 Chrome/62.0.3202.94 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Create a select tag
2. create options for the select tag
3. set one option as selected and as disabled
The font of this tag is hardly readable
Minimal Example to reproduce:

<html>
<body>
<select>
  <option value="bla" selected="selected" disabled="disabled">Bla</option>
  <option value="blubb">Blubb</option>
  <option value="blubber">Blubber</option>
  <option value="die">Die</option>
</select>
</body>
</html>

What is the expected behavior?
The element is rendered with a blue background so it should have a default color that is readable on a blue background. To still make visible that the element is disabled one could choose a lite grey that is still readable on the blue background.

What went wrong?
The font of the select tag is hardly readable when the option tag is disabled and selected

For your convenience I just copied the HTML in JSbin:
http://jsbin.com/gequvipodu/edit?html,output
and attaching what I am seeing.

I'm not sure I am seeing what is described in the OP, as I don't see
"blue background".

Could you attach a screenshot, if possible?

Yes of course, here you find the screenshot. I don't now why it is gray in your setup. Are you using a different Chrome and/or OS Version?

The selection background color is retrieved from your local system setting.

On the other hand, disabled selected text color is fixed to 'gray', not retrieved from the system setting.

select:-internal-list-box:disabled option:checked,
select:-internal-list-box option:checked:disabled {
    color: gray !important;
}

I remember we have a reason to use the fixed color here, but don't remember the details.

It would still be great if this could be fixed. After the first hovering of an active element, disabled elements can no longer change color when hovered. So this could be solved by not adding background color to disabled elements in the first place.
