The tops of the Chinese characters are not linked!

Reported by jidanni@gmail.com, Dec 3 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/63.0.3239.30 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Big Bug!
The tops of the Chinese characters are not linked.
Open the attached HTML file.
Move your mouse slowly up and down the Chinese characters.
Their top parts are not clickable! Terrible. No wonder sometimes clicking
does nothing.
If they were as tall as the English, they would be fine,
but they are taller.

This problem does not occur in any other browser I tried today.

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
10% of clicks will result in no action.

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Yes that is a very good movie and indeed
I can see your version / operating system lacks the bug.

The difference I see is:

 \ not hyperlinked
----- yes hyperlinked
 --- yes hyperlinked
 --- yes hyperlinked
 --- yes hyperlinked
 | | yes hyperlinked
 --- yes hyperlinked

Therefore it perhaps is a Linux-only bug.

Unable to reproduce on Linux. What font is used to render the Chinese characters on your system? (inspecting the element and scrolling to the bottom of the "computed" style tab will show it under the "rendered fonts" section).

I also see in a "Properties" box there in the Inspector, a suspicious
202 which maybe should be 222. Alas attempting to copy it gives:

offsetHeight
:
202
offsetLeft
:
8
offsetParent
:
body
offsetTop
:
86
offsetWidth
:
956

Sorry.
All I know is I opened two bug reports and pasted various things into each.
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=791327
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=792531
The interesting conclusion is that on Linux the linked height of the box
doesn't reach as high as it should.

Comment 13 by kojii@chromium.org, Dec 15 2017

I can't reproduce this either. Probably the font has broken metrics? Did you try other fonts, or other browsers with the same font?

Comment 14 by jidanni@gmail.com, Jan 3 2018

Please test the s.html file with the
"WenQuanYi Zen Hei system
Used as: "WenQuanYi Zen Hei""
In Firefox, the <strong> area reaches the top. In chromium it doesn't.
I didn't try to reproduce this yet but we have had metrics issues with fonts from the WQY group before, compare https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=233851#c11

Comment 16 by jidanni@gmail.com, Jan 3 2018

OK I added a note there.
Building a Chromium at #527672 and installing fonts-wqy-zenhei 0.9.45-7 and looking at s.html and r.html I do not see the issue. I do get the same output as Comment #6 and I see the same glyph shapes as seen in the screen captures in both this issue and those posted at issue 792531 , however the highlight on my local machine covers the full glyphs. Can someone who can reproduce report which version of the fonts-wqy-zenhei package is installed?

I don't know what more feedback I can give you.
If you are in central Taiwan welcome to come to my mountain for a demo.
Thanks for the invite, but save us a trip and post the output from "dpkg -l fonts-wqy-zenhei" instead. If you can attach a screenshot of the problem, that would be good to have as well.
OK problem now gone in
Version 72.0.3626.7 (Developer Build) built on Debian buster/sid, running on Debian buster/sid (64-bit)
You can close the bug!
