HWA enabled causes video to freeze when opening tabs in another window

Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/62.0.3202.94 Safari/537.36 Example URL: Any YouTube video will cause this Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Make sure HWA is enabled (if it's off, no stuttering will occur). 2. Open up video (in this case make it a YouTube video). 3. Drag the video tab and make it its own window. I use a 21:9 monitor so this a workflow that is very common for me. 4. In the other non-video window, it's as easy as just running the mouse cursor over your bookmarks. That alone will cause the video to stutter and even eventually freeze. Same goes for opening tabs. What is the expected behavior? The video should not sutter and should not freeze. This isn't an issue with HWA in either Firefox or Edge. What went wrong? I've uploaded a video to YouTube so you can see the issue first hand. I start off with just a single window with the video playing. Running the cursor over the bookmarks or opening tabs in the background does not cause any stuttering or freezing. The issue only begins once I open the video in a second, separate window. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSFUiATITXA Did this work before? Yes I honestly don't know, but I've had HWA enabled in Chrome for years. Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5 Does this work in other browsers? Yes Chrome version: 62.0.3202.94 Channel: stable OS Version: 10.0 Flash Version: Contents of chrome://gpu: Note: To properly save this page, select the "Webpage, Complete" option in the Save File dialog. Everything is okay. The key here has to do with HWA being enabled. If I disable HWA there is no stuttering and no freezing, regardless of the number of tabs being opened, the number of opened windows or mousing over the bookmarks.

The buffer health is fine, but you can see where the network drops to zero for that very extended period of time is when I begin moving my cursor over the bookmarks.
,
Nov 21 2017
Hmm, very strange. Not sure why hardware acceleration enabled vs not would have any impact on network...
,
Nov 21 2017
To try and narrow things down, I went under chrome:flags and disabled using specifically HWA for video decode, while leaving "hardware acceleration" under Settings enabled for everything else. It solved the problem. It's apparently not just HWA in general, it's specifically to do with the hardware decode feature. Why that only seems to stutter and freeze when using multiple windows, I couldn't say. For the record, I'm running the latest nVidia drivers and have tried doing clean installations multiple times to no avail at solving this problem.

Ah that might be issue 775898 if you're on fall creators edition.
,
Nov 21 2017
I had this issue before the Fall Creator's Update (I kept hoping a driver update would fix it) and if you watch the video, you'll see I never put the video in fullscreen.
,
Nov 21 2017
Good to know you had this before. Regardless of fullscreen, it's possibly still the same/related issue, so you might try some of the workarounds mentioned on the bug (enable win 8 compatibility and/or --disable-direct-composition)
,
Nov 21 2017
OK so enabling Win 8 compatibility mode didn't help, nor did --disable-direct-composition. However enabling both did prevent the video from freezing on me, but it is still dropping frames like no tomorrow when I hover the mouse over the bookmarks and/or open up new tabs in the background so long as I have at least two windows open. However it doesn't seem to cause the video to violent sutter and eventually freeze entirely. The frame drop is still very bad though, easily over 100 frames in around ~3 seconds and it'll just keep going on so long as I keep my cursor moving over the bookmarks. Thousands of frame drops in under a minute was pretty easy to get to.
,
Nov 22 2017
Dale, the video in #0 shows a spinner when the video pauses. Might be related to decoding and not composition. --dsiable-direct-composition flag is only for canary but Windows 8 compatibility mode does the same for stable.

A trace I captured for issue 787626 shows long sections of GPUScheduler blocking the GPU main thread which will stall out the hardware decoders. I think something is stalling out the GPU thread which leads to the dropped frames and loading spinner. solidstate89@ can you capture a chrome://tracing with just the stuttering youtube tab open for a few seconds? Please select rendering and then enable audio, media categories as well. sunnyps@ any other categories you'd like to see?

Choose Javascript and Rendering categories maybe?
,
Nov 23 2017
As per comment#10 adding Needs-Feedback label Thanks!
,
Nov 24 2017
I did a trace with the settings (javascript and rendering with audio and media checked) as requested.
,
Nov 24 2017
Thank you for providing more feedback. Adding requester "sc00335628@techmahindra.com" to the cc list and removing "Needs-Feedback" label. For more details visit https://www.chromium.org/issue-tracking/autotriage - Your friendly Sheriffbot
,
Nov 24 2017
Can you have a look at the trace? Thanks! Drive by thought was that hovering bookmarks/opening tabs means browser UI thread is doing painting, thought it doesn't sound like that's involved. But the GPU scheduler may be prioritizing that work and starving video.
,
Nov 28 2017
Hmm, can't open the trace, it's unfortunately so big it keeps crashing my tab :O solidstate89@ can you record a shorter trace? Only a few seconds around the glitch occurring is necessary. I'm guessing you left that one running for a fair bit?
,
Nov 28 2017
It wasn't that long. Maybe a minute tops. I'll record a shorter one tomorrow though.
,
Nov 28 2017
OK this trace is much shorter. Ended the recording just after the YT video began freezing.
,
Nov 28 2017
Hmm, there are large gaps on the GpuThread that seem to correspond with the command buffer being paused. Whenever that happens the DXVA video decoder can't work. =>danakj@ is that what you suspected was happening? Why did we start pausing the command buffer during these times? It looks pretty janky.
,
Nov 29 2017
I don't think command buffer decoder ever "pauses". It just chooses which stream/context to execute commands from next until there's no work to do AFAIK. What I thought was that the ui compositor may be giving work to the gpu process which runs starving the media work. Looking at the trace, CrGpuMain is constantly running tasks from what I see. However it is sitting in HandlePostSubBufferCHROMIUM for 16.223 ms at a time, which means we told DisplayScheduler to draw when we shouldn't have? It does look like non-media work is just dominating, it's spending 16ms in CommandBufferService:PutChanged for the compositor worker (raster for the ui compositor?) then 16ms in swap buffers. As long as that keeps this up, it never schedules any media work.
,
Nov 29 2017
Hmm, the trace has a section for "command buffer paused" - what is that then?
,
Nov 29 2017
Maybe that's showing which channel is being scheduled? I dunno.
,
Mar 25 2018
So I don't know when this was fixed or what fixed it, but I'm no longer suffering this problem apparently. I just tested it out. Not sure if it was a driver update or a Chrome fix but I can finally turn HWA back on. |
