Issue descriptionExample URL: Steps to reproduce the problem: go to this video in Chrome on an Android phone then tap the full screen button (don't view it in the YouTube app, view it in Chrome) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz95u3UVpaM notice that the video is locked in an orientation that it was not intended to be, and there is no way to change it to the intended orientation What is the expected behavior? What went wrong? Now try going to the same URL in Firefox for Android and tap the full screen button. Notice the video is in the orientation they intended it to be viewed in Did this work before? Tested the issue in Android and could reproduce the issue. Steps Followed: 1. Launched Chrome Browser. 2. Navigated to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz95u3UVpaM 3. Observed the orientation is getting stuck on going full screen Chrome versions tested: 62.0.3202.94, 64.0.3271.3 OS Android 8.1.0 Android Devices Pixel XL Build/OPM1.171019 Below is the bisect info ======================= Chrome Good Build -- 57.0.2951.0 Chrome Bad Build -- 57.0.2952.0 Unable to provide the tool bisect info as getting all builds in the bisect. hence assigning through the manual CL Manual CL: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+log/57.0.2951.0..57.0.2952.0?pretty=fuller&n=10000 From the above revision range suspecting the following change have fixed the issue and assigning the issue to the owner concerned-- https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/f7a1a35656d44a09d2cf9e5f8bba484f7a5fb378 @mlamouri -- Could you please look into the issue. Unfortunately, this is a bug with YouTube: the video is in landscape even if the content is in portrait. In other words, the video has black margins on each side. Chrome isn't able to determine the video should be in portrait. As far as I know, YouTube doesn't play portrait videos in their native resolutions.

But going to the same URL (and other vertical videos) in Firefox for Android and Safari for iPhone, there is no issue. Try it yourself.

Because Chrome locks the orientation when a video is fullscreen. It locks the orientation using the video aspect ratio which in this case is visually incorrect. There is really no technical solution to this problem except for YouTube to fix their website.

Not sure why the two previous comments are deleted but to answer them nonetheless: as far as I know, YouTube is aware of this issue.

That’s very strange that my comments keep deleting. I’m using Chrome for iPhone right now. Perhaps a bug? |
