Issue description

Looks like this is due to the following commit (pasted below). Assigning to change author for trade-off decision (size increase of >1MB is worth the benefit).

Yup. 0.9% in sizes sounds like an acceptable regression for being able to get better trace data from the field on linux. Closing.
