Chrome started crashing on Windows 10

Reported by br...@streetfunder.com, Nov 11 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/63.0.3239.40 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Click on Chrome icon
2. Try to enter a URL or do anything else and Chrome crashes
3.

What is the expected behavior?
It should work as expected.

What went wrong?
Not sure. I've never had this problem before. I wasn't even using Chrome when it originally crashed. Chrome was open on my laptop on 11/9/17. Around 4pm CDT, I noticed that it was no longer running. I had several tabs open before it crashed. Now, when I open it Chrome asks to restore tabs. Whether I restore or close the restore window, it crashes after 30 seconds or so. I've never had an issue with Chrome before this, so I'm not sure what to do. I was able to install the BETA release and that works just fine.

Crashed report ID: No

How much crashed? Whole browser

Is it a problem with a plugin? N/A

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 63.0.3239.42 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version:

I am running the following version now and it seems to work just fine. Version 63.0.3239.40 (Official Build) beta (64-bit). Two extensions were modified around the same time. Not sure if this could be the cause of the problem. No Windows update was added around the time of the crash or right before the crash.

Interesting. I've uninstalled and reinstalled regular Chrome (non BETA) several times now. I was able to hit the Help - About Google Chrome before the browser crashed, It says regular Chrome is version 62.0.3202.89 (Official Build) (64-Bit). Seems like it should have download and installed 63.0.3239.42. See attached screen shot. Perhaps it is crashing while trying to update.

As a workaround I am running Chrome BETA for now. but I need regular Chrome to work, so I can access my extensions like Postman etc...

@brian: Thanks for the Report:

Tested the issue using #63.0.3239.42 on Win 10 and could not reproduce the issue.

The present Chrome market Stable version is #62.0.3202.89, so could you please help us with the sample Crash I'd from chrome://crashes? that would help us in triaging the issue further.

Thanks!!
@Sandeep Chrome (non-BETA) crashes before I can run this statement. chrome://crashes/? I tried several times. Is there another way to get the crash report? Thanks!

@brian: Thanks for the update! Yes you can find the crash id in below path : "C:\Users\xxxxxx(Username)\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Crashpad\reports"
If possible,Could you please clear the cache from you system and install the latest build from market link(https://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel) and provide the crash id & observation of the issue.

Thank You!

There are some dump files in the Crashpad/reports folder, but I'm unable to read them. I'm also unable to clear the cache. I downloaded and installed the latest stable for Windows 10 64-bit and Chrome is stall crashing.

Could this be caused by an extension? If so, how can I remove extensions without opening the app? Can I rename some folders or something like that? This is so weird.

Thanks!

Thanks for the update.

@brain-- Try creating new profile from the chrome top right corner person icon and refer to the attached screencast for the steps and see if you can still reproduce the crash in new profile, we might get any clue , what exactly is causing the issue.

Thanks!

I'm unable to create a new profile. Chrome crashes before I can really do anything. Is there a way to disable the Extensions folder or certain Extensions by renaming folders? Also, please note that I'm using the Postman Extension and I have lots of Post, Puts, Deletes etc... that I do not want to lose. Thanks!

As a workaround, I've been using the BETA build. Version 69.0.3497.42 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) is now crashing when trying to upload or save a file. Both Google Chrome and Google Chrome BETA are unusable. Please advise.
