https://crbug.com/436810 came back (in Chrome 61)

Project Member Reported by kwe...@google.com, Nov 2 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version : 61.0.5163.100 (32-bit)
OS Version: Windows
JavaScript: V8 6.1.534.41
Flash: 27.0.0.183
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/61.0.3161.100 Safari/537.36

My friend contacted me because the print dialog screen was blank and she was unable to close it (even by pressing escape). I did some Googling and found https://crbug.com/436810 from 2 years ago. I had her check chrome://crashes, but there was only one entry there from April 23.

The solution ended up being what was provided in https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=436810#c142: "Hit Shift + Esc to bring up the task manager, Look for a Print: task and click end task". This is definitely not a user friendly solution, and I wouldn't have guessed that, so I'm glad I found the bug.

Did something happen recently that would introduce a similar regression as https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=436810?

I copied some of the details from her chrome://version page.

I am unable to reproduce the issue on the reported version(61.0.3163.100- 32bit) on Windows-10. Print dialog opens and closes using ESC key without any issues.

kwekua@: Upgrade to the latest stable(62.0.3202.75) and confirm if there is any specific page where this happens consistently, also please confirm whether issue is seen in incognito or new user as well?

It may be the case that your friend is seeing similar symptoms, but it's not obvious if the underlying cause is the same. Here are some questions that may help us make progress:

1) What model is the printer and what's the driver version?
2) Is this problem specific to this printer? If your friend prints to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer virtual printer, does that trigger the bug?
3) If the problem is printer-specific, does plugging the printer into a different Windows computer trigger the bug on the other computer?

I don't think I'm going to be able to get answers to the questions in #3. My guess is that she's used that printer before, and the time she asked me for help was the first time she had had issues with the Chrome print dialog, but getting answers to the question is going to be very hard.

It'll be very hard to diagnose this problem without additional information. Does "very hard" really mean something like "it will be a long time before you see your friend in person to get this info" ? If that's the case, I'm willing to wait and we can revisit the bug report when the info is available. Otherwise, I don't think we'll be able to make any progress here.

More questions: Does this happen with a specific webpage, or any webpage? Does turning off installed Chrome extensions help?
