My shelf clock says "5:48". Unfortunately, I'm currently flying across the country in a metal tube, so that doesn't mean a lot without knowing where my Chromebook thinks I am. We could be talking PDT, MDT, CDT or EDT!
Chrome OS should know when I'm in the air. Some dead giveaways:
1. Captive portal domain is "www.gogoinflight.com"
2. Crappy wifi connectivity, but the SSID isn't "GBUS"
3. Inconsistent geolocation
- Maps thinks I'm in Phoenix Airport, which I've never been to;
- the timezone detector thinks I'm in Eastern Daylight Time;
- in reality I'm somewhere over Illinois (according to flightaware)
4. My location changed from SFO Airport to Phoenix Airport in the span of 30
minutes but Hyperloop doesn't run that route yet
(I switched from SFO Free WiFi in the airport to in-flight wifi after takeoff)
5. Google Inbox/Calendar know I'm supposed to be flying right now, and I wouldn't
be sitting around filing bugs if I overslept for my flight
In conditions like these, showing the time zone in the shelf would be helpful. Otherwise I need to click the shelf and click the date in order to see the time zone in Settings.
Other options to consider for frequent flyers:
* Show a notification when the auto-detected time zone changes from its
previous value
* Provide an "Airplane Mode" that only allows connecting to known in-flight
hotspots, shows the time zone in the shelf, and provides a persistent
notification with my flight status using the flight number from Inbox
Using component "OS>Systems>Mobile" because it says "carrier issue"
