Off screen images do not load (remain black) one main page load has finished

Project Member Reported by picksi@google.com, Oct 31 2017

Issue description

Example URL:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41736574

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to the BBC page, wait until it is completely loaded.
2. Scroll down. All images on page remain black.
3. Go back to top of page & use pull-to-refresh. Now scroll the page down rapidly. Any images you get to while the page is still loading will be correctly displayed

What is the expected behavior?
All images should appear when they are visible to the user.

What went wrong?
The page finishes loading and subsequently viewed images remain black.

Does it occur on multiple sites: N/A

Is it a problem with a plugin? N/A

Did this work before? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Chrome version: 62.0.3202.66 Channel: stable
OS Version: Nougat
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 27.0 r0

This may well be a bug on the BBC site, but may maybe (?) the internals of some visibility checks have changed recently?

Tested the issue using 62.0.3202.66 on Android 7.0.0; SM-J710F Build/NRD90M and some how observe the same behavior as mentioned in comment #0.

This looks to be a BBC site specific issue as same behavior is seen in Desktop as well.

Note: Same behavior is seen in Firefox and UC Browser as well.

@picksi: Can we close this issue as this is specific to BBC site?

Thanks!!

FYI I don't see this issue on (linux) desktop, but if it's a cross-browser problem then it seems likely to be a BBC issue. I'll close it :)
