ChromeOS issue: Native printing PPD for Canon imageRunner 5000

Project Member Reported by vkhabarov@chromium.org, Oct 26 2017

Issue description

ChromeOS version: 61.0.3163.120
ChromeOS device model: any
Case#: 13565199

Description:
Canon imageRunner 5000 (and probably lot of other imageRunner printers) doesn't seem to have native PostScript support, as Canon themselves propose to use some proprietary software to make those printers work with PostScript (https://www.codehost.com/canon/ BrightQ™ Pro).

However, right now if you choose this printer in Chromebook, it would install Foomatic/Postscript PPD, which doesn't seem to work.

As far as I understand, it is almost impossible to adapt BrightQ software for Chromebook use, as it is x86/x86_64 only and non-free for customers outside US/Canada, so it would be better to replace non-working Postscript driver with working pxlmono, for example from this page - http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Canon/Canon-imageRunner_5000 (customer confirmed that it works)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Add Canon imageRunner 5000 printer to Chromebook, selecting Canon in manufacturer and imageRunner 5000 as a model
2. Try to print

Current Behavior / Reproduction:
Several blank pages

Expected Behavior:
Printed pages

Looks like we should investigate where that PPD came from if it's not working. We have the pxl filter but the PPD we're serving indicates the printer should understand PostScript.
Apologies for being slow to look at this.

openprinting certainly seems to think that this printer does postscript, but Canon's docs that I can dig up give no such indication.

I'll swap out the PPD for the pxlmono based one on the serving side.

It does do Postscript, but requires non-free software to do that. And I found pxlmono as recommended on openprinting actually.
Status: Fixed (was: Assigned)
This is fixed for the 5000 and should be live in serving within a few hours, but I don't have a way to test for other printers.

Marking fixed for now, please reopen if you have datapoints for other printers.
