Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS armv7l 9765.85.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/61.0.3163.123 Safari/537.36 Platform: 9765.85.0 (Official Build) stable-channel veyron_minnie) Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Install android app Gmail via Playstore 2. Set up accounts and create a new email 3. No spell check ability What is the expected behavior? As with android specific devices (e.g my Samsung phone) the OS provides a spell check capability to native apps such as Gmail. What went wrong? This is not available via Android on Chrome OS, thus Gmail does not have a spell check feature. Given I'm dyslexic, this is a serious limitation. Did this work before? No Chrome version: 61.0.3163.123 Channel: stable OS Version: 9765.85.0 Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 27.0 r0 Now chromestore is out of beta, I had expected spell check in android apps to be a core feature

Confirming this issue seems to impact all Android apps in Chrome OS except Microsoft Word which appears to use its own spell check outside of Chrome OS.

Hi, Any update on this bug report? Thanks.

Considering it is still listed as unconfirmed with no owner I don't think anything has changed which is a shame. I personally don't need spell check as much as I would like some sort of visual indicator in Android apps that a word was miss-spelled so I know to go back and correct it.

@google any intention of implementing this? Spellcheck in Android apps is seriously lacking on ChromeOS.

There hasn't been any activity on this in quite some time. With the talk of GBoard support in Chrome 69 will that then give us some level of spell/error checking on the hardware keyboard as well hence the lack of movement on this bug ticket?

Also interested in this. Spell checking in Android apps is much needed feature.

This is important to me as a Pixlebook user. Not havnig this feature cheapensthis premium device. Also, using Gmail for Android I replies and forwards open in a new window and there is no option visible to adjust the type font. For example, no italics or bold options.

I just realized my ~ $1500 Pixelbook doesn't have spellcheck on it when using Android apps, and I find that really disappointing. I do a lot of writing on it because it's not my business laptop, which helps me focus. Can someone at least acknowledge this issue?

This is starred by 32 users and should def get more attention. One can home that when they add Gboard support to M69 it will include spell checking in Android apps.

This is also an issue for me on my Azus 302 this seems to Do with how the OS is supporting android apps. It looks like there needs to be a OS level spell check separate from the browser.

Can we get this issue fixed please!

I also need this. It is laughable that it isn't included.

just brought a chromebook, but I am unable to use email as there is no spellcheck possible on *any* email app - gmail, bluemail etc. Have had to return my acer chromebook. Crazy such a basic feature is not available!!!!

It's more ridiculous that it's been a year since this ticket was created and it is still listed as "unconfirmed" as if it isn't really an issue. Google has lost their minds to release a high priced tablet to compete with the iPad Pro when it doesn't even have basic features like this.

I have a found that running Thunderbird on Linux mostly solves the problem, spell check works and the container mostly works like a native app, but scrolling does not behave the same.. That said, it is totally stupid that this issue has not been fixed by Google.

I really cannot understand why this hasn't found any traction with the chrome OS/android integration folk. Maybe it's because (technically) it isn't a bug; it appears just to be just an absent feature. Why it is missing is a mystery to me. I've used digital devices for over 30 years (Amstrad NC200, Psion 3mx, 5mx and Netbook, Windows mobiles, Palm PDAs etc) and each one had a spell check facility. I thought spellcheck had become a minimum standard! I'd love to know 2 things. 1) How can we give this issue a higher profile and b) why is it an issue at all (technical issue? Strategic?) Maybe OS 70 will fix it, but I suspect this will never be addressed.....

Noted re Linux - I guess that's promising!

I was hoping this will be resolved when Gboard will come to chromeos or with Android Pie. Time will tell. This is the most starred issue on the chromium tracker. It's embarrassing this has not been addressed yet.
,

Seems like this is not resolved with Gboard coming to ChromeOS. When enabling Gboard (in M72 dev and M71 Beta), it only works when the device is in tablet mode and if GBoard is the active keyboard. Spell checking is still not working in Android apps when the device is in regular laptop mode. Can someone from the ChromeOS team please update this thread if there are any plans to implement proper spellcheck in Android apps? This issue is starred 53 times since October 2017 and there has been 0 response from the Chrome team. This is simply an unpolished experience or users who purchase the devices and needs to be addressed.

I know this has been frustrating for many users. We've escalated this feature request internally and it's being tracked by this internal ticket: http://b/120141961. Haven't confirmed a release date quite yet.

@trumbull, thank you for letting us know it is being worked on internally.

BTW - we do have spell check on Google Messages - see pic!
,
Jan 5
@comment #39, the google messages app is a progressive web app, not an android app. That’s why you see spellcheck working properly there.
,
Jan 5
Ahh....of course! Thank you....!!

...a glimpse of a solution at least........ho hum.....
,

Well that didn't last long. A few hours after i reported it working on the latest dev channel, it just stopped working. Very odd. Powerwashed to try and get it to work again, nothing. Maybe it was a server side thing that was turned on by Google and was then turned off. When it was working though, it was working as expected. When a word was underlined in Android apps, you could right click the underlined word and be offered alternative words.

..shame I can't put the cork back in that champagne bottle! Seriously though, at least we know it's possible.....thanks for sharing and do let's us know if it reappears! |
