WDM Multi I/O Device - Choppy audio (Windows)

Reported by marc.ba...@gmail.com, Sep 25 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/61.0.3163.100 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
https://www.webrtc-experiment.com/RecordRTC/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Plug in a USB multi input/output audio device (Windows).
2. Open the link above, select a set of inputs from your multi-input/output driver (in my case, Prism Titan inputs 1/2).
3. Select record; then either download or note the audio recording.

What is the expected behavior?
I expect smooth audio; no glitches.

What went wrong?
The audio is choppy. The audio may also sometimes start off OK and then drift into choppiness.

Note, this feature works OK in Firefox (current stable); see the attached files to compare.

Did this work before? No

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay.

- Using OSX (CoreAudio); the same driver works OK in Chrome on a Mac (Canary and stable)

- I have not tested on Windows 7.

- Sample rate of device set to 48kHz.

- No extra flags set (exclusive mode, buffer etc.)

- Seems to be those USB audio devices from a semi pro or pro audio nature. A standard 2x in/2x out (mono) USB audio device (like an M-Audio M-Track) is OK. I have also witnessed other users with a similar problem using semi pro / pro audio devices in Chrome; audio drifts and audio becomes choppy.

- Note the attached files to compare; same USB sound card working just fine in Firefox; but choppy audio in Chrome. This is also true for other websites using Chrome.

Adding label TE-Hardware-Dependency, as Prism Titan inputs 1/2 as a multi-input/output driver is not available with TE-India team.
Hence, requesting someone from MTV team to please have a look into the issue and adding label TE-NeedsTriageFromMTV for further investigation.

Thanks...!!

The Firefox recording doesn't sound good either (there is about a second of silence after each second of audio). Seems to me like there may be an issue interfacing with the device? Could you go to chrome://webrtc-internals, check "Enable diagnostic audio recordings", and repeat the experiment, attaching the resulting files?
I'm not too sure I understand? The Firefox wav I attached is perfectly fine - there is no dropping of any audio. It's only silent when I go silent? Running the diagnostics in Chrome may not be a bad idea.. I can do that.

Oh, I see. When I played it back (using totem on my Linux machine), it was interpreted as 16 bit audio (mediainfo also gives the depth as 16 bits). When I load the file into Audacity, it's interpreted as 32 bit audio and it sounds fine. Reading the wave header

00000000 52 49 46 46 2c c0 12 00 57 41 56 45 66 6d 74 20 |RIFF,...WAVEfmt |

shows the bit depth as 16 (it's at offset 22).
When making the debug recordings, also grab the contents the audio tab of chrome://media-internals and post here.

Sorry for the delay;

Here is the output from the test recording via Chrome v.65
Still the same result when recording (see attached).

Here is the output from chrome://media-internals 'audio' tab:

Did you follow instructions in #6 to make this recording (diagnostic debug recording)?
Please find the zip of the 'diagnostic debug recordings'.

The recordings in comment #13 sounds very much like issue 637558 - missing audio in the input compared to the output and consequently glitches and sped up audio.

marc.bakos: you wrote in the other bug that Chrome 67 does not exhibit the problem. Have you tested with Chrome 66 (first version with the other bug fixed)?
grunell: I have not tested with Chrome 66; let me find that version and I'll revert back to you.

As I mentioned, Chrome 67 does not exhibit this issue anymore - which is great and could conclude this issue as well.
OK, then it could sure be the same issue. Chrome Beta is currently at version 66. If you could test with that, it'd be great. Do you have the problem with Chrome Stable (version 65)?
OK perfect - thank you. I'll download 66 this evening and give it a go (GMT).
The problem still exists in 65 and before; this is also true with a lot of other users with similar sound cards I've come into contact with - other devices have been fine in previous versions. I'll report back.
@grunell: Update, Chrome 66 works as expected - so it does seem related and fixed.

Seemingly this looks like it was a buffer issue with certain devices on Windows(?) - but not all. I would still like to learn more about the audio layer in Chromium; mainly what clocking it's using - the use of CoreAudio (Mac) / WDM on Windows etc. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction for more information?

Thanks for the update! With the similarity in the symptoms and being fixed with Chrome 66, this is very likely the same as the above mentioned issue. I'll closing this as a duplicate.
Regarding Chromium's audio code, you can start looking at the platform implementations in sub-folders of https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/media/audio/ and work your way from there.
Thank you for all your help, Grunell.
