chrome error page shows dino game raw sprites instead of actual error page

Reported by k...@chain.com, Sep 19 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.113 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. click on a link that points to nonexistent dns name
2. be lucky enough to hit this bug

What is the expected behavior?
Chrome should display an error page.

What went wrong?
Chrome displays static images that look like the sprites for the dino game.

Does it occur on multiple sites: N/A

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 60.0.3112.113 Channel: n/a
OS Version: OS X 10.12.6
Flash Version:

If I type this bad url in the url bar, I get a normal error page as I expect. It was only navigating from another page that triggers this.

It happens very consistently for me, but only on this one web app.

I've tried unsuccessfully to find a minimal repro. We've also fixed the broken link in the web app that was triggering this, so I can't even link you to the full web site. Sorry, I hope this is enough to go on!

Do you have Javascript disabled, either in general, or on that particular site?
I can't be sure from the screenshot whether the page content is loaded. Looks like it hasn't from the floating bullet point. This points to JS being disabled as the text content isn't populated. However in my test, even if I disable JS, the offline interstitials still runs JS.

The showing of the game assets however points to the CSS not working correctly. In dev tools, in elements could you open body, and select 'offline-resources'. It should be set to display: none.

Also could you update your browser and see if you experience the same thing. M61 should be available on the stable.

Correction M61 is not fully rolled out yet, so you may not have an update yet. Should be soon though.

I have no special JavaScript config -- so enabled everywhere, I believe.

I did disable JavaScript in general at some point in the past, and had it that way for a few weeks, but I've since turned it back on (weeks ago).

Unfortunately that will be pretty difficult. So far I've only ever seen this
on a production system, and that system isn't triggering this behavior any more (because we fixed our broken link).

If I manage to reproduce it again, I'll definitely do those things and post an update here. But I think it's unlikely I'll be able to.
