Consider starting autoplay muted videos with controls hidden.

Project Member Reported by dalecur...@chromium.org, Sep 13 2017

Issue description

If you check out m.facebook.com you'll notice that all of their autoplay videos have a nasty controls flash at the beginning. I don't think that initial flash is that valuable and I think the UX would be improved if the controls started hidden in the muted autoplay case.

I think they could workaround this by always setting no controls, or possibly by setting the controls attribute on later after playback start.

Another solution might be to fade out the controls instead of winking them out of existence.

FWIW, we will be transitioning out the controls with the redesign I believe.

Though, I agree that it could be an option to not show the controls as soon as playback starts as it can be a bit annoying. rachelis@, WDYT?

This happens even when the video is click-to-play and not muted. I agree the sudden flash is bad. I think a slow removal of the controls is the best experience, which will hopefully be the default with the new controls.

This has been updated per dahlke@ comment so that it's a slow removal; marking as obsolete.
