stumpy: hangs at boot on update_firmware screen, reboot goes to login screen.

Reported by rsher...@gmail.com, Sep 2 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 9592.71.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.80 Safari/537.36
Platform: 9592.71.0 (Official Build) stable-channel stumpy

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Cold boot
2. Screen shows "Critical Error" message (see attachment)
3.

What is the expected behavior?
Boot to normal Password Screen

What went wrong?
Cold boot to "Critical Error" happens every time.

The solution is to shut down the computer, then immedicately start it up again. That results in a black screen, a flash of light, then the Chromebox/stick result is the normal password request screen. This same process happens from any longer shutdown.

Did this work before? Yes Before 8/30/2017

Chrome version: 60.0.3112.80 Channel: n/a
OS Version: 9592.71.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 26.0 r0

This happens on my Chromebox, 64 bit and Chromestick, 32 bit computers. There are no problems with the Chrome browser on my Windows 10 computer.

Sorry, This report is only about the Chromebox, not Chromestick. I had another problem that included both computers.

Is this migration related?

Comment 4 by uekawa@google.com, Sep 15 2017

this is not ext4 migration related, I believe this is a firmware update that happens at the boot screen.

The message is from
/usr/share/chromeos-assets/text/boot_messages/en/update_firmware.txt

src/platform2/init/chromeos-boot-alert

which is used to apply new firmware.

re #1: Can you send feedback report or is that not possible?

actually, there's multiple feedback reports of stumpy in this situation on M60 and M61.
Erm... over to Sameer who might know more than me on kernel/firmware side of things

I believe Todd has already been chasing this.
