Chrome for Android has no more menu entry for printing the current page |
||||
Issue descriptionI remember having a "Print..." menu entry in Chrome on my Android device that I used to print pages (mainly to PDFs but sometimes to actual printers). I recently noticed this entry is not presented anymore. I initially thought the ability to print had been removed but it seems it is still present. I as looking at a page that had a "print" link and clicking it properly opened the expected dialog from which I was able to save a PDF file of the page. It would be great if the menu entry was brought back as it allows any page to be printed. Otherwise users are limited to only the ones that provide the link themselves.

Probably WAI, but no idea why. CCing some folks who may know why "Print..." moved.

Print option has been merged into "Share", more details are in issue 629642, Kingston may know more about this.

Putting Print under Share is fine in most cases, but there is a special case for WebUI pages. Because Share option is not available for WebUI pages, so there is no way to trigger printing. For example, in issue 760829 , an Android developer wanted to report a bug with more info about GPU, previously, it was just saving chrome://gpu page to PDF and share that with us, but now we have no other options but taking screenshots.

I didn't know about the move from an individual menu entry for it to be housed inside "Share..." and I did find it there. This makes the feature less discoverable IMO. Also, did this change affects the printing of private and dynamic pages? I tried printing my Gmail inbox and a Facebook post and they both seemed to have problems with some images not showing up. Maybe that was already the case before but I wouldn't know.

Re#6, By Gmail inbox and Facebook post, did you mean to print from Chrome or Gamil/Facebook app? What do you mean by private and dynamic pages? On Android, due to the restriction of Android framework, we don't print background of webpage by default. Could you file another bug with steps to repro issue and cc me there? Thanks!

The move from the overflow menu to the Share menu item should have preserved the functionality of printing so that would be unrelated. I agree the WebUI issue is unfortunate. One option is to put Print back if Share is missing though I imagine this would be a fairly uncommon flow.
