very large text file makes tab stop refreshing

Project Member Reported by semenzato@chromium.org, Aug 22 2017

Issue description

Trying to view and search through a large .txt file makes a tab completely unresponsive. It won't even refresh the display, but just show whatever was painted on the screen before switching to that tab.

To reproduce, I opened system_loga.zip from here:

https://listnr.corp.google.com/product/208/report/71050794671

On a chromebook, opening the zip file mounts it and shows its content, which in this case is a 55.8 MiB system_logs.txt.

Double-clicking system_logs.txt opens it into a tab. Then I try to search for "meminfo=". At this point the tab stops displaying correctly, as described above. Closing the search widget makes no difference.

I see the same issue -- and I also seem to get some graphics corruption -- maybe failing to allocate tiles?

Comment 12 by enne@chromium.org, Sep 5 2017

skobes says that this is not a dupe of issue 759436 because that issue is only broken between r497601 and r498305.

I am not 100% sure, but most of the boards I am seeing belongs to "rambi" family.

I have seen reports from:
gnawty
quawks
squawks
swanky
kip
candy
banjo

FYI, the "Failed to flush rendering" error is harmless an unrelated. It's a noop implementation of flush_external extension complaining about us using it incorrectly. The drivers that require that we use that extension expects us to use it incorrectly.. I'm in the process of fixing that using driver workaround flag.
I can repro this on gnawty twice so far.
I will start bisect now.

To repro the bug, I need to do something with combination of loading the large text file, making screen shot, opening 3D maps, and opening many tabs.
I got some error

Good (tried 10 mins without repro, but this cannot 100% rule out the possibility): 2017-06-28 23:42 / 9693.1.0 / 61.0.3144.0

Bad: 2017-07-18 23:01 / 9756.1.0 / 61.0.3159.8

Will continue bisect.

marcheu@, for the random black boxes bug shown in #1,

I have been able to bisect to locate the bug is between

bad: 2017-07-12 10:06 / 9738.0.0 / 61.0.3154.0
good (cannot be 100% sure because takes time to repro for each build): 2017-07-12 02:07 / 9737.0.0 / 61.0.3154.0

There are many kernel rolling out between this two ChromeOs builds, but no Chrome side change.
https://crosland.corp.google.com/log/9737.0.0..9738.0.0

Could you please take over from here to find what might standing out? I have a gnawty can repro the bug by doing the operations in #16.

Thanks.
#25,
Played with version 9737.0.0 / 61.0.3154.0 for a while, cannot repro.

So the first bad version should be 9738.0.0 / 61.0.3154.0.

@26: if it's a kernel bug, why does it happen on samus which has kernel 3.14, which doesn't have any change in that interval?
#27,
I am not sure #23 is the same problem. The most reported problem looks similar to the image on #1: Random black boxes on the screen.
#27, if samus has the same issue but different kernel, might be multiple kernel version was rollout in a close range of time. These kernels either have common/similar files to increase the memory consumption or triggered some old bugs.

For the Chell reported on M59 59.0.3071.134
https://listnr.corp.google.com/product/208/report/72045578563
There are some kernel V4.18 changes related to memory:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=727707

reveman@ thought it might be OOM so that content tiles with random garbage as a result.
+semenzato@ and sonnyrao@, do you think this bug is related to bug 727707?

Thanks.
Cc: semenzato@chromium.org
sonnyrao@, what is the device you reported at #2?
Cc: bhthompson@chromium.org
teravest@ and bhthompson@: Does this cl only get reverted on v4.18 or v4.4 as well?
Revert "CHROMIUM: drm/i915: Don't evict bound object in the shrinker"
https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/526974
https://crosland.corp.google.com/log/9460.60.1..9460.60.2
The corresponding 4.4 change for that revert is here:
https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/541656
The commits that you're pointing at were done to resolve https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=727707

We need to be able to swap graphics memory because it can have a large footprint on our systems. The patches that are linked also bring us back in line with upstream kernels.

I'm not surprised to hear that this issue is memory related. I don't know much about the details of graphics or why you're seeing missing tiles; I don't know anything about graphics.

re #30 -- That was on a Kevin
I'm not sure but I think it was running 9765.31.0 at the time
Looking at https://listnr.corp.google.com/product/208/report/72535664127

I don't see any low memory notifications ever going to Chrome.
There's also virtually no swap usage:
SwapTotal: 2876336 kB
SwapFree: 2859820 kB

So I don't believe there's any issues with swapping graphics memory, at least in that report.
@35: we don't need to swap graphics memory, since it is managed by user space. The kernel lacks the semantics for proper GPU memory management. Note that on ARM we can't swap graphics memory and things work fine.
I put a test device (gnawty) in a bad status and uploaded a report at here:

https://feedback.corp.google.com/product/208/neutron?lView=rd&lRSort=1&lROrder=2&lRFilter=1&lReportSearch=user:welcomegger@gmail.com&lReport=72669831864

re #39 -- screenshot in #1 was taken on an ARM device -- so I agree, that it doesn't have anything to do with swap
teravest@, after our chat offline, I am testing 61.0.3163.80 at gnawty. It seems the tab discarder works very well: the contents are always reloaded when opening many tabs and the memory pressure is released. I only get Snap tab by far, do not get the random tiles.

There might be some changes to improve the tab discarder at chrome side. Situation get much better. But this cannot 100% exclude users getting random tiles such as the report on #36.
#42, I was wrong.

In #42 I turned off the swap on my test device. After I turn on the swap, I can easily repro the bug. This is interesting, because #39 mentioned that swap is not related.
#43, possible reason I can think of: maybe with swap on, tab discarder thinks there is too much memory available and does nothing. Or maybe there is some bug related to zRAM?
semenzato@, Here is the equation: available_mem = available_ram + available_swap / 4
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=702282#c5

On my test gnawty the swap memory is 2876448kB.

I am not sure what will the best equation be.

Comment 46 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 11 2017

Cc: derat@chromium.org
+derat@, users are reporting similar tile issue in M60 [1].
We also get report about missing tile in M59 [2].
Recent there was some OOM fixes [3].
I wonder if they are related.

Currently our theory is the memory is under pressure, if the tab discard could work more aggressively with higher threshold, this might not happen. But we still want to find out why under low memory, the graphic rendering does not work as desired.

Cc: bccheng@chromium.org
+bccheng@ for more advices.

We might have two paths for fix:
1. Short term, fine tuning the threshold for tab discarder.
2. Long term, find out what is wrong with the graphics rendering with low memory.

marcheu@, you mentioned that at the graphics side, maybe be related to zero-copy/one-copy. Is there any thing I can help? Thanks.

Comment 50 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 11 2017

Thanks sonnyrao@ pointed out that the cl to add swap_memory/4 as available memory is only a refactoring: https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/522402

So another possible trigger might be this cl: Revert drm/i915: Don't evict bound object in the shrinker"?
https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/541656

I can try to revert this revert to see if I can make things better.
Cc: vovoy@chromium.org
Vovo, could you help Tao to take a look too? Thanks!

Comment 52 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 12 2017

I bisected the ChromeOS kernel 4.4 for M61, and find this cl (still the build of 9738.0.0) is the first bad cl.

https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/460963

Comment 53 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 12 2017

Continue #52, based on the bad version in #52, I reverted this revert cl: Revert "CHROMIUM: drm/i915: Don't evict bound object in the shrinker", and every thing works fine with some OOM, but no GPU rendering error.

Owner: marc...@chromium.org
Assign this to marcheu@ for further investigation.

To be clear, here is the result for kernel v4.4.
There were two cls reverted the change to fix some OOM issue [1,2], but these did not cause GPU rendering error immediately. Only after the third cl [3] was rolled out, then we see GPU rendering errors.

Report of 73186735906 on #57 is pyro, which is on kernel 4.4 as well.

Fievel report on #56 is on kernel 3.14.

After we figure out solution of 4.4, we might know how to fix other kernel versions.

Comment 59 by vovoy@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

The following patch shall fix this issue on kernel 4.4.
I have verified this patch on gnawty 63.9940.0.0.

Comment 60 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

vovoy@, that is awesome!
What is the rational behind this and will this fix be valid for other kernels?

Some other kernel reports:
chell: kernel 3.18
fievel: kernel 3.14

walter@, I cannot find your feedback, could you please provide the feedback id? Thanks.

Comment 61 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

vovoy@, read the cl description, which explains it.

I had other questions, it seems the cl "drm/i915: Unify active context tracking between legacy/execlists/guc" was only applied to v4.4? And some people told me that KEVIN is not using drm/i915? But we are seeing similar problems.

Comment 62 by vovoy@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

The patch fixed a bug introduced by "drm/i915: Unify active context tracking between legacy/execlists/guc" (https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/460963) that some dirty flag is not set properly.
The fix is valid only for 4.4 as "drm/i915: Unify active context tracking between legacy/execlists/guc" is only backported to 4.4.

Comment 63 by vovoy@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

Kevin is an armv7l board and is using mali gpu, so it shall be different issue on kevin.

Comment 64 by vovoy@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

Uploaded patch for review:
Fix this issue on kernel 4.4 intel gpu.

Comment 65 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

Can anyone repro the issue on Kevin?

On my kevin, the device will has some Snap tab, and then hang for a few minutes, and then restart.
wutao@ what build version was this?

Comment 67 by wutao@chromium.org, Sep 15 2017

ketakid@,

My kevin version is 9765.48.0 / 61.0.3163.70.
The kevin version in sonnyrao@'s report on #1, is about 9765.30.0 / 61.0.3163.51 based on our chat.

UPSTREAM: drm/i915: Restore marking context objects as dirty on pinning

Commit e8a9c58fcd9a ("drm/i915: Unify active context tracking between
legacy/execlists/guc") converted the legacy intel_ringbuffer submission
to the same context pinning mechanism as execlists - that is to pin the
context until the subsequent request is retired. Previously it used the
vma retirement of the context object to keep itself pinned until the
next request (after i915_vma_move_to_active()). In the conversion, I
missed that the vma retirement was also responsible for marking the
object as dirty. Mark the context object as dirty when pinning
(equivalent to execlists) which ensures that if the context is swapped
out due to mempressure or suspend/hibernation, when it is loaded back in
it does so with the previous state (and not all zero).

object as dirty. Mark the context object as dirty when pinning
(equivalent to execlists) which ensures that if the context is swapped
out due to mempressure or suspend/hibernation, when it is loaded back in
it does so with the previous state (and not all zero).

gnawty R63.9954.0.0 test image works fine with the test steps in #74

Comment 78 by vovoy@chromium.org, Sep 19 2017

Kevin R61.9678.0.0 is OK with steps in #74, I will continue bisecting tomorrow.
vovoy@, great work fixing this! I would recommend opening a separate bug for Kevin, since it is definitely going to be a different problem.

There are 2 different issues discussed in this thread.

1. BayTrail graphics corruption issue
Issues 758798 , 762119, 755385 are duplicate of this issue
repro steps example: open many tabs and run webgl aquarium with 4000 fishes ( https://webglsamples.org/aquarium/aquarium.html )
    wutao@ found the culprit CL ( https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/460963 )
and the following patch from upstream kernel fixed this issue:
    https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/668339

2. Kevin graphics corruption when opening large text file
    repo steps:
    i. Open very large text file on chrome
ii. Wait chrome finishing loading the text file.
iii. Press end key (or search + right arrow) to scroll to the end.
I have found the culprit CL and created another bug to track this issue ( http://crbug.com/767002 )
