Some fonts rendered much thinner than Chrome 59

Issue description

Chrome Version       : 60
Other browsers tested: Chrome 59, Firefox

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Set the font to Cantarell. Source Code Pro suffers as well.

What is the expected result?
text rendered like Chrome 59 and Firefox

What happens instead?
text rendered much thinner than Chrome 59 and Firefox

Might be due to the FreeType change discussed at  issue 726631  (which will eventually affect pretty much all apps, as I understand it; Chrome is just at the forefront here).

Does exporting FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=35" restore the old rendering style?

@comment 4: No, it does not.

BTW, I'm using Version 60.0.3112.101 (Official Build) (64-bit).  Should I try with canary?

This could be a result of gamma correction being applied or not, with thinner appearance in the former case.
