Tested the issue on Ubuntu 14.04 using reported version 60.0.3112.78 and latest stable version 60.0.3112.113 with below steps and is not reproducible. Attaching screencast for reference.

Steps Followed:
1.Navigated to http://www.sample-videos.com/download-sample-doc-file.php and download sample .doc file
2.Now clicked on downloaded file from downloads bar and observed. It got opened in default LibreOffice Writer

This issue might be specific to xubuntu,Since we do not have that environment here could some one from MTV team look into this issue.

I think it's not opening because your document editor is crashing. Clicking on the download does not open the containing folder; it opens the file with whatever the system default for that filetype is. If you want to open the containing folder, click the little menu button next to the download entry and choose "open containing folder"
