That patch says we now conform to the spec and cites a spec page. But I think we were doing the right thing in displaying the icon, consistent, I think, with this:

"The user agent is expected to treat the element as a non-replaced phrasing element whose content is the text, optionally with an icon indicating that an image is missing, so that the user can request the image be displayed or investigate why it is not rendering. In non-graphical contexts, such an icon should be omitted."

But I think we were already doing the optional part of displaying something that indicates the image is missing. So I agree with the reporter.

But maybe I'm looking at the wrong piece of spec.

Marking as a regression. The other option is WontFix.

I chose the same optional behaviour as Firefox, which is the only other browser implementing the spec, for the sake of interoperability.

For accessibility reasons, the ALT tag must be present within the the image HTML.

WCAG 2.0 Guideline 1.1.1—"All non-text content that is presented to the user has a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose."

Decorative images do need an ALT Tag, but the ALT tag can be empty (ALT="", best for Web) or a blank space (ALT=" " best for Microsoft Office or a CMS). Both are valid but produce slightly different results across environments.

Because of the change in Chrome, broken images that have ALT=" ", or not ALT tag at all, will frequently disappear on a page. The width="" will still block out the correct width, but the height="" is being overridden by the alt text. The height becomes that of the font and line-height variables, or 0 if there is no ALT tag or text.

If you are working in a CMS, and require the broken image icon and block to be present in order to click on it and fix a broken image, this change will effectively remove broken images from a page and prevent this behavior. Firefox still displays an outline of a broken image without ALT tags.

There needs to be some kind of designation that an image exists on a page but does not have a correct SRC URL. Having ALT text there, inline with the content, simply does not make it stand out enough to know something is wrong.

For now I prefer to keep our behaviour consistent with the only other implementor of the spec, Firefox. If the spec changes and makes the broken image mandatory we can revisit.

If we provide no mechanism to get the image then I am strongly against closing this.

@schenney - no we don't provide a mechanism equivalent to the Firefox one.

I must agree with @schenney, that if there is not a workaround for this, this issue shouldn't be closed. If you are comparing the behavior to that of Firefox, Firefox shows a broken image indicator in more instances that Chrome does, and provides a workaround if you do not wish to have this reduced behavior.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the spec, and I am certainly looking to learn where I am misunderstanding it if so, but in looking at it I see the following under "If the src attribute is set and the alt attribute is set to the empty string" and "If the src attribute is set and the alt attribute is set to a value that isn't empty":

"User agents may provide the user with a notification that an image is present but has been omitted from the rendering."

And from "If the src attribute is set and the alt attribute is not":

"Otherwise, the user agent should display some sort of indicator that there is an image that is not being rendered..."

To me, it would make it sound as though it were up to the user agents to decide whether or not to show any kind of indicator that an image is not rendering. I'm curious as to what purpose it would serve to omit this indicator? I can understand that to the end-user, not seeing a broken image icon could be a good thing. To remove it entirely however, would impact developers that are trying to track down and fix broken elements, and the indicator was a quick and easy way to see something was wrong.

Firefox - shows broken image placeholders when there is no alt text
Safari - shows broken image placeholders
Chromium- does not show any broken image placeholders

Because we no longer match other browsers, I think this change is a regression.

I heard a rumor that Rob may be on vacation. How about we wait a week and then figure something out if he doesn't get back. Unfortunately this will be in M61 no matter what we do, but we can fix it for M62.

So which of the following should I change it to:

- Always show broken image placeholders like Safari/Edge
- Show them when there's no alt text (like Firefox, but without the workaround mentioned in #6)

The latter is closer to the spec I think (the broken image is optional according to the spec).

I would go with the "if not alt text" approach, I think. Not a strong preference though.

I am leaning towards matching Edge/Safari because multiple folks took the time to file a bug, and compatibility is more important than the spec.

Schenney, doesn't the "if not alt text" approach lead to no workaround (per comment 6)? I think we need to always show the image or we'll have that issue.

I would tend to view this from a user perspective.

Developers want to see when images are broken and presumably also know about whether or not alt-text is present. So they could infer broken images regardless of our choice although with more cognitive work if we don't draw broken when alt-text is present.

Users probably don't care to see broken image icons and developers might not want them to see anything. So that argues for not drawing broken image if alt-text is present (developers could use " " as alt text, for instance). On the other hand, users probably don't care much if they do see it, so this is a weak argument.

We can't make everyone happy. Simplest thing would be to go back to what we had before, which I guess is the always show broken approach. But I think giving developers some control of the situation via alt-text is a good thing, so I'm weakly arguing for that.

(Hijack thread: stick an emoji in as your alt-text. How many images could be represented as an emoji? Would we even paint that?)

It seems this was already litigated in  issue 644802 .
Seems best to show only if there is no alt text, if that is what Firefox does.

There is also the accessibility question in comment 4 - dmazzoni, any feedback on that?

While I am coming from a developer perspective, I have an argument against only showing the alt text and not a broken image icon.

Attached is an image of a CMS that contains a broken image and ALT text. Looking at the top half of the image, can you find where the broken image is?

The bottom half shows where it is. A user will most likely think that it was a bad typo, and not a broken image displaying ALT text.

Without a broken image icon, or a border around the ALT text of the broken image, this situation can arise where no one can tell what is really wrong with the page.

Even from a user perspective, I would rather know something is broken and be able to read around it than possibly read through it because there was no spacing between the broken image and the text around it.

Opt to display the broken image icon where the spec allows it

https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/rendering.html#images-3 allows
for the optional display of a broken image icon in the second and
third cases described there. Currently we only display the icon in the
second case. This CL makes us display an image icon in the third case
too. This has the potential to display the icon where we've never
displayed it in the past, so if authors need to have an image that
doesn't display at all they will need to specify it as one that
'represents nothing' in the language of the spec. Typically they can
achieve this by setting the alt string to empty, with or without
a src attribute. (See
