Suspected Chrome causing entire system to hang/freeze

Reported by philip89...@gmail.com, Jul 31 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.78 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Unable to reproduce "on-demand".

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
From time to time my system will hang/freeze when using Chrome and/or switching to Chrome. It seems to mostly happen when using Gmail. I suspect Chrome is the culprit, but it's difficult to say for sure.

When the freeze happens, the system becomes completely unresponsive except for mouse movement. I can't click. I can't use the keyboard. I can't use the touch bar. Forcing me to "force restart" the machine.

Last time it happened, the screen was also "tearing". It kind of looked like the attached screenshot (I tried to mockup what it looked like, since I forgot to take a photo...)

Perhaps it's a GPU related issue...?

Hardware: MBP 15" 2017 (Touch bar)
Software: macOS 10.12.6
Chrome: Reproduced on 59 and 60

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 60.0.3112.78 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.12.6
Flash Version:

How can I try to diagnose the issue further. Is there some sort of logging feature that I can enable to track what happens just before a freeze happens?

philip890918@, thank you for the report. Can you please record a chrome://tracing (Ref: https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/submitting-a-performance-bug) while experiencing this issue?
Labels: Needs-Triage-M60
The problem with using chrome://tracing is that I still haven't been able to reproduce the issue "on-demand". It seems to only occur once a week or so. As far as I can tell, chrome://tracing can only be used for short intervals (~minutes).

@philip890918-- Could you please confirm us if you can still able to reproduce the issue in latest chrome stable M60 #60.0.3112.90 with a fresh chrome profile without any extensions and flags enabled and update us with your observations.
I have returned my Macbook Pro and received a replacement machine since I believe the logic board was faulty. I don't know why, but the freezing only ever occurred when using Chrome (specifically Gmail). I guess this issue can be closed now.
