I have an id/name of an element where that element might be generated from one of several places. During execution of the javascript I want to be able to retrieve the source of the element.

Why can't you just override the prototype of the function that you are calling. ie; are you calling like createElement ? You could provide your own implementation of createElement polyfilling it and grab the callee's source from it and stash it on the lement itself?

Something like that would work in any browser and you don't require a new feature.

Suggested using a polyfill for this. No feedback why that wouldn't work.
