[FR] - Revision logs and option to revert back to an earlier revision of Chrome profile settings

Project Member Reported by rcabantog@google.com, Jul 28 2017

Issue description

Description:

To be able to have a feature that allows users to revert back to an earlier configuration on their Chrome Profile.

Use case:

To have a revision logs (similar to the revision logs for google docs, sheets etc.) for the changes they made on their Chrome profile. The main use of this feature is if in case they need to revert back on the previous changes they made on the profile and if they wanted to restore specific data from a specific time and to avoid losing all their data if something went wrong.

Motivation:

For G Suite users using their Chrome profiles for business to have an easy way to go back to an earlier settings in cases like they don't have any back up data (bookmark etc.) for their profile and if something happened that causes their data to be deleted.

Existing workarounds:

If they have another device or computer where the information were locally stored.

Hey, Mihai. I think you know more about this.

rcabantog@google.com: What do you mean specifically about "changes they made on their Chrome profile". Are you only referring to changes to the Chrome settigs, or any changes to the Chrome profile (new pages added to the history, new bookmarks added)?

Hello. I am the G Suite admin who had all of my profile info wiped clean. I lost all passwords, all start-up pages, all bookmarks, web history, extensions...everything.

I was surprised to find out that there seems to be no revision history for my profile. Any Google Sheet for example can be restore to previous version with all of the info at that point in time. That would be ideal for one's Profile as well. So yes, any and all changes, additions made up to date X.

How did you get all of your profile wiped clean? Was this a local disk problem? Or did you delete them by mistake? What profile data did you wipe clean (bookmarks, password, settings etc?)?

I think you can already use Chrome sync to back up your profile data to the Google cloud. This way, if something bad happens to your local disk, you can simply sign in to Chrome and re-sync your data from the cloud. Note that this would not help you if you actually wipe your profile from Chrome yourself (e.g. if the users clears its bookmarks from the Chrome bookmarks bar, then they are also cleared from the Google cloud storage).

Hi.

They shut down their Chromebox (where their Profile is logged into) and when it came back up it seems to have been cleared totally.

They were asked to set up again from scratch and he did. Chrome browser settings, history, bookmarks, passwords, extensions and are all gone.

We have this consulted and was confirmed that they have been affected by the bug. crbug.com/693439

That's why they came up to an idea to have a feature like this so they can easily revert back to the previous setting or retrieve data they previously have for their profile.

Hope this answers your questions.
Hi!

I'm the new POC handling the case related to this FR. We are wondering if we could get any update on this and/or if there's any other information needed clarified? Thanks!

Hello and thank you for the follow up! Again, I am certainly impressed by the follow up.

Jenny Velle Google Cloud Support - Supervisor just reached out to me to follow up on this. My reply to her is below:

Hello again,
I do appreciate you keeping me in the loop!

I have been able to recreate the data that I need, so no need to worry about me and my ability to use Chrome.

On the other hand, having a restore capability moving forward for anyone that loses their data would be a big plus, as we discussed.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
Mark

Removing Mihai from the owner, since this is an Enterprise FR and not something that the signin team has the bandwidth to take on.
