Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:54.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/54.0 Steps to reproduce the problem: Only horizontal tabs are supported. What is the expected behavior? Vertical tabs should be supported too What went wrong? There was reportedly an effort to create vertical tabs, but then abandoned because "users don't really want that". Reportedly users rather want a tree style tab, which is "too complex to implement". Well, 1) no, users will love even just plain vertical tabs. 2) Firefox has a Tree style tabs addon, which works well for years. So it's doable I believe. I haven't found a bug [1] so I am adding one so that users can vote on it. I made a quick poll in our 10k people company and I found that around 60 % of respondents would prefer vertical tabs. There are some plugins but those are really terrible - either they crash the window manager, or they hide the page, or they somehow screw up the tabs (missing, appearing twice, buggy rendering, ...) Thanks for considering making this a natively supported feature. Assuming this as feature request, changing the status to untriage, so that the issue would be addressed. Thank you.

There are a number of bugs that were filed on this and closed. Chrome actually had side tabs for a while, but we pulled them.

Pulled means removed? Why? Did it do any harm? 2017-08-02 16:41 GMT+02:00 s… via monorail < monorail+v2.3231893262@chromium.org>:

Yes. See the first half of bug 344870 comment 113. Unfortunately since that point the RFE to add a sidebar surface for extensions was WontFixed as well, so I have no good options to present to people who want this :(.

Note that the comment I link is some of what the original reporter here is responding to. While I'm sure there are users who would be happy with non-tree-style vertical tabs, that wasn't most of the feedback we got when we tested the feature, and the benefits just didn't justify the cost. It's definitely a feature that would make some users happy though.

I wonder then who did you test with? The silly tabs madness on the top is the single worst feature of Chromium. Just few tabs and it turns into a palette of unfamiliar icons, and the horizontal space of nowadays wide screens is wasted on blank space at best, advertisments at worst. That's the primary thing keeping me on Firefox, honestly (which is terribly slow on the other hand). 2017-08-10 3:44 GMT+02:00 pkast… via monorail < monorail+v2.2899342933@chromium.org>: |
