"git cl web" opens Safari

The recent depot_tools updates switching to gerrit has broken "git cl web".  The following message is printed to the terminal:

0:63: execution error: "https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/583945" doesn’t understand the “open location” message. (-1708)
70:78: execution error: Can’t get application "firefox". (-1728)

If I just type "open https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/583945", the CL is correctly opened in Chrome.

Can this be duped with  crbug.com/728071  ?


That bug mentioned this as a workaround:
BROWSER=open git cl web
