Page content rendered blank on window scroll when browser window is huge

Reported by aleksan...@nowodzinski.pl, Jul 26 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.115 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
 fender.com

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Use an external Thunderbolt HiDPI monitor (Dell P2415Q) and MacBook Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015.
2. Use the clean profile (no extensions, plugins, etc.), open the browser window on the external monitor.
3. Go to fender.com (it redirects to http://shop.fender.com/en-PL/start for my country)
4. Scroll the page (mouse scroll or the scroll bar)
5. Some parts of the web page got "erased", they become blank white areas.
6. Hit CMD+A to cause the re–paint.
7. Blank areas are re–painted and show up. Go to 2..

See the screencast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3CWrC-yBAw&feature=youtu.be

What is the expected behavior?
The web page should be rendered correctly, without blank areas no matter the scroll position or window size.

What went wrong?
I suppose there's some problem with the rendering part of the web browser, triggered by a combination of certain DOM elements and environment like the size of the window.

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? No

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 59.0.3071.115 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.12.6
Flash Version:

Scale up and down the window, then reload the web page. The problem occurs *only* when the window is big enough. I couldn't reproduce the issue on my Mac's internal display probably because the screen is not big enough to trigger the bug.

I also noticed the bug on other web sites occasionally. I don't remember addresses though.

What I also think might be important is that I experience https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=690598 and https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=702369 too. These bugs could be somehow related.

ccameron/kbr: thoughts? Likely related to issue 702369 ?

If the monitor is huge enough it might be possible to make a window so large that it trips some OpenGL limits.

Un-CC'ing myself; sorry but I can not help triage this. Too many incoming requests.

kbr: The monitor is nothing fancy. It's basically 4K (3840×2160px), which gives the user 1920x1080 workspace in the HiDPI mode. There are tons of monitors like this and the browser window doesn't even need to be maximized to trigger the bug (see the screencast in the description).

Status: Assigned (was: Unconfirmed)
vmpstr: ericrk mentioned that you checked in some code to increase memory limits for 4k monitors. Can you see if this is something that has been fixed / needs a merge / needs more fixes?

Comment 7 by ericrk@chromium.org, Jul 28 2017

Likely related to crbug.com/695427 (the bug vmpstr@ fixed) - This fix is in Chrome 61, so it would be good to confirm whether the issue is still observed in Canary.
I checked the Version 62.0.3169.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit) and I confirm that the bug is gone.
