Touch type on Surfacetablet doesn't work well

Project Member Reported by mlepage@google.com, Jul 24 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version : Latest Chrome for Windows 10

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Use Surface tablet in tablet mode (e.g. without Surface Book dock or keyboard)
(2) Tap on a text field to enter text in google.com search box
(3) Onscreen keyboard pops up (good)
(4) Start typing text and hit enter --> onscreen keyboard disappears!
(5) Instead, typing goes into URL bar, and you have to tap again to get onscreen keyboard to start over

What is the expected result?

Google.com in Chrome should work seamlessly on Surface tablet

What happens instead?

Instead it's very awkward to do a Google search on Surface tablet

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

I'll get more info when I get home (don't have my Surface tablet with me).

OK I have my Surface tablet with me. It's the one that comes with Surface Book, unconnected and in tablet mode (fingers), without using the pen. It runs the latest Creator's Update for Windows 10.

If I go to google.ca in Chrome, the center search field is not selected and the onscreen keyboard is not present. I tap on the center search field and the keyboard shows. As soon as I type a letter, the keyboard disappears and a letter appears in the URL bar with a live completion. The center search field is gone, so I have to tap on the URL bar to bring the keyboard back and continue typing.

This is a poor experience. I have to manually bring up the keyboard twice.

If I use Microsoft Edge, a new tab has a (non-Google) search field which automatically brings up the keyboard (no need to tap) and as I type, the field keeps focus and the keyboard doesn't disappear.

If I go to google.ca in Microsoft Edge, the center search field has focus and the keyboard appears automatically (no need to tap). I can type without losing focus and the keyboard doesn't disappear.

So Edge performs better on Surface tablet than Chrome, both on its own site and on Google's site.

Please improve Chrome on Surface tablet.

I expect in addition to affecting all Surface tablets, this probably also affects the 2-in-1 laptops that fold the screen back 360 degrees to go into tablet mode. Unfortunately I don't have one to try.
