This sounds like a stuck control key. Are you perhaps holding down the control key or have spilled something on the keyboard?
Not an entirely bad, knee-jerk diagnosis, but incorrect. I am assiduously careful about food and especially beverages anywhere on my desk. That is why I have a credenza behind my desk!

No, this issue appears to be completely independent of the keyboard. With Firefox, an issue very similar to the one I filed the bug report about has been described and a number of solutions proposed, all of them involving modifications to Firefox, from disabling all of the extensions (been tried, negative improvement) to modifying registry values (done on Firefox (no change), NO idea how to proceed with Chromium).
Do you have a link to the Firefox bug? It might provide some useful things that you've diagnosed already. I know that some touchpads on windows simulate different events usually at the driver level but this is Ubuntu so I wouldn't expect that.

Can you goto: http://rbyers.github.io/eventTest.html

And log what you see there. On the config make sure you select Mouse, Keyboard and deselect "Simple"

Try scrolling. I'm interested whether "Ctrl" appears with the wheel events or not.

If it does then probably an xev and getting the dump from that is useful.
Unfortunately no, I no longer have a link to the issue I researched and reported with Firefox. If you think the information might prove helpful here, I will see if I can reconstruct that information.

I will be happy to do as you ask regarding further testing of Chromium by visiting the URL shown in your message, however I have one question.

When you ask me to log what I see there, would you please explain in more detail what it is you wish me to do? I want to be as helpful as possible in finding the cause of this issue so it can be corrected.
Perform the action on the page. As you are saying you'll see it zoom and not acutally scroll. But the events will be logged to the webpage that it saw. Copy and paste those into a file and attach it to this bug. Hopefully something will be revealed there.
Thank you for the further explanation.

I will plan on accomplishing this testing either later on today, or if not, then tomorrow without fail. I will also be certain to copy the information presented by the website to a file and attach it when I make my report.
Hello,

Thank you for patiently waiting on me.

I followed your directions precisely. When I opened the configuration settings on the web page you provided the link for, the following options were already selected: mouse; touch; keyboard; pointer; simple; coalesce; touch summary; and capture pointers on pointerdown. I de-selected simple, as you directed and then OK.

While on the page, I spun the control wheel on my mouse one direction and then the other, back and forth while looking for any change in the size of the text that was scrolling past. I observed no change in text size. I also should mention that within at least the past month, I have not been affected by the problem that lead me to open this bug report initially. This leads me to wonder if some change(s) caused by an update in the last month or so might have corrected whatever the underlying issue was that caused this behavior. In any case, I saved the output from the webpage as you requested. Since Chromium no longer supports a menu bar across the top of its window (as an aside, do you happen to know why the decision was made to remove the menu bar? I still find myself missing it), I selected Print from among the options offered by Chromium and saved the information as a .pdf formatted file which I have attached. If this does not provide you with sufficient information, please let me know!

Best regards,

Hi thepcmedicinia@, thanks for the feedback. It sounds like the issue is no longer occurring, can we close this bug?

Re: menu, if you're referring to a menu bar with "File, Edit, etc" items, I don't think Chrome on Linux has had that, at least for many years. It's possible Chromium as built by your Linux distro may have had that and removed it but I wouldn't know much about that. Chrome has a "Three Dot" menu in the top right which should have all of the functionality of a menu bar. (And for copy/paste, you can use Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V keyboard shortcuts).
Yes. I think it's reasonable to close this bug report out. If this issue should rear its ugly head again (and I'm not expecting it to), I'll let all of you know. Thank you for all of your help!
