Status: Fixed (was: Assigned)
Should be fixed. Deleted .git/index and regenerated it again. Ran 'git fsck' to confirm the rest of the repository is alright.

I'm not sure what caused the index to corrupt. If this happens again, or build fails with symptoms that clearly indicate disk IO problems, we may need to replace this machine.
