It's not my change; I just removed some dead code.

+sashab who might be or be able to find a better owner.

Maybe the code should just bail out when 'number' is INT_MIN.

ClusterFuzz testcase 5030612726710272 is flaky and no longer crashes, so closing issue.

If this is incorrect, please add ClusterFuzz-Wrong label and re-open the issue.
