Multiple very similar suggested sites

Project Member Reported by dullweber@chromium.org, Jul 6 2017

Issue description

I recently managed to get four very similar suggested sites.
I think I had no or almost no search history and I wasn't logged in.

Two "Google" sites had the same icon. (google.com and google.com with a parameter)

One "Google" site had no proper favicon but the same name as the other two. (google.com/chromebook/offers/)

The fourth "Google Ma..." (Google Maps) also had no favicon and to replace two letters with three dots seems weird to me :)

This seems very confusing to me.

Chrome Canary 61.0.3143.0

Not logged in means this was TopSites.

By "parameter" you mean a query parameter, like "?param=whatever"? Those are supposed to be ignored, so if this was the only difference between the two "Google"s, then that's a bug. (Path isn't ignored though, so "google.com" and "google.com/webhp" are not considered the same.)

AFAIK we (the NTP) don't do anything in particular about the titles; I guess the UI element decided that two letters don't fit but three dots do?
The end of the "Google Ma…" is an ellipsis character (U+2026), which might very well have a shorter glyph than "ps" :)
The ellipsize feature is part of the Android OS ui framework. Can't easily change that, and I expect they've looked at it more than once already :-)

Thanks for reporting! Is it possible for you to share the URL each tile is pointing to? You should be able to find that in chrome://ntp-tiles-internals

For Google Maps' icon, I can anticipate that it's a known issue related to client-side redirects.
Sadly I'm not getting these results anymore. I'm not quite sure but it is possible that one of the "Google" sites pointed to google.com/search?some=param ?

The case about the ellipsis makes sense, thanks
I am able to reproduce this (discovered while working on issue 737878 ).
1) Clear all data in ToT Chrome and do not sign in.
2) Open NTP
3) Type in the omnibox mobile.twitter.com/bagder/status/879198063998513152
4) Open 2 NTPs
5) Observe Twitter tile
6) Type in the omnibox mobile.twitter.com
7) Open 2 NTPs
8) Observe 2 Twitter tiles.
