Repeated back/forward navigation while casting a tab causes audio to become distorted

Reported by karlmi...@gmail.com, Jul 1 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.109 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
http://ifi.ie/2017/07/01/?post_type=film

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to http://ifi.ie/2017/07/01/?post_type=film
2. Click on one of the movies, e.g. http://ifi.ie/a-man-called-ove/
3. Cast the tab.
4. Play the embedded youtube movie trailer.
5. Click the back button in Chrome.
6. Click on another movie.
7. Repeat steps 4-6

What is the expected behavior?
Videos play with clear sound and image on the cast destination.

What went wrong?
After a few iterations of steps 4-6, the audio becomes completely distorted when playing the embedded youtube video.

Did this work before? Yes The problem began when the cast functionality moved from the Cast extension to a built-in Chrome feature. When the casting was done by the extension, this never happened.

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

This is not limited to youtube videos, it happens with any kind of content that has audio (e.g. Bandcamp pages). Note that I'm casting to a Chromecast, and my Chromecast is plugged into an HDMI audio converter and the audio signal goes into my stereo (I don't have a TV). So I can only speak about the audio quality, not sure what the video signal looks like.

My guess is that the back/forward navigation in Chrome causes some sort of change in memory or bandwidth that causes the distortion.

The component should be Internals>Cast.

Unable to triage this issue from TE-End because of non-availability of casting device, adding "TE-NeedsTriageFromMTV" label for further triage.

+cc dbbrooks@ to see if we can get a local repro.

I could not get a local repro. But it sounds similar to older bug 639884

Moving to the right component & triage
karlmicha@gmail.com, can you reproduce this issue then send a feedback report? If so, please also include the bug# in the feedback comments, you can also put attn: dbbrooks, that will help me find it. That would help us to diagnose the issue. Thanks!

To send feedback, right-click on the cast icon in the toolbar, then click "Report an issue". Be sure to select the option to send debug logs as we'll need them to look into the issue.

thanks karlmicha@gmail.com, I found the feedback report.

@amp, @skonig, here's the feedback report#: 74733753685
Cc: -amp@chromium.org
Status: ampchromium.org (was: Untriaged)
amp@ is this something you could take a look at? At least let's try to triage it to a sender or receiver issue.

I couldn't repro myself on 62.0.3202.38 (Mac OS X).

Side note: for me, the ifi.ie site has some weird flickering every 5-10 seconds that could be a rendering or script glitch. Not sure if that is related or not.

Comment 13 by amp@chromium.org, Oct 2 2017

Status: Available (was: ampchromium.org)
Seeing some errors from the feedback report about parsing json, sounds like it's bad data from the receiver, but if we changed our parsing it could be on the sender side:
[2017-09-30 09:19:02.20][WARNING][mr.DongleUtils] Unable to fetch/parse setup info.
Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0
SyntaxError: Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

at <anonymous>[2017-09-30 09:19:02.54][INFO][mr.mirror.cast.StreamingLaunchWorkflow] Stopping streaming for audio+video streaming.

Setting back to available as I'm going to be out for some time and won't be able to look at this right away.

If it's still available when I get back I'll pick it up.
I sent another feedback report with Attn: dbbrooks. I played a local audio file (file:///...) and the same problem happened.
thanks karlmicha@gmail.com
