Why does Gmail always highlight messages when I have just read a message?

Reported by jeffando...@gmail.com, Jul 1 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.115 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1.
2.
3.

What is the expected behavior?
Have always known Gmail, I have been using 10 + years now, to NOT highlight messages.

What went wrong?
I read a message, I return to Gmail to read my next message it ALWAYS highlight all the messages in BLUE?

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 59.0.3071.115 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 26.0 r0

It is annoying.

1. Do you have any extension installed? Try to disable any extension first.
3. Does it only happen when you use Chrome?
2. Can you attach a screenshot?
The HIGHLIGHT doesn't happen all the time, I have great difficulty in sending you a screen-shot.
Maybe the extension I use is causing the difficulty, I will be disable my extensions one at a time, maybe that works?

I got a screen-shot that I was talking about.

Here it is?

Anyway you could suggest what I do would be gratefully received?

Unable to reproduce the issue using latest stable #59.0.3071.115 on Win 10, Mac 10.12.4 and Linux Ubuntu 14.04

@jeffandolga: Could you please try creating a new profile with no extensions and apps and check if you still face the issue?

Please let us know your observations, that would help us in further triaging.

Thanks!!

1. If you refresh/reload GMail - does it still happen?
2. Have you tried disabling extensions (either one-by-one or all of them, reloading GMail after you disable each extension)? Does it still reproduce regardless of extensions or lack thereof?
3. Does it reproduce in other browsers?

4. If it only reproduces occasionally, it looks like you might be double-clicking or triple-clicking somewhere on the page which cases the text on that part of the page to become selected (like when you select text for copying it to somewhere else, it becomes highlighted). Clicking somewhere else on the page should generally unselect the text.
I cannot get it to reproduce very often?

I could try it in other browsers, I use Chrome and I want to see what causes it?

It reproduces occasionally, I don't I consciously double-click or triple-click, I will have to look at that and get back to you?

I have disabled the extensions that I use most frequently, not all, if the trouble does persist I might think about disabling them all.
