Similar to what we have on Android, there should be a Share item on the Chrome menu to share the URL of the current document.
Where would it share to? Depends on the platform, but there are a number of options:
- On Windows, we could use the OS share system provided by Windows 10. This won't work on Windows 7 and earlier; not sure about Windows 8 (that had a different share system to Windows 10, probably not worth supporting).
- On Mac, we could use the OS share system provided by Mac 10.8 and above. Chrome requires 10.9 so this is supported everywhere we run Chrome.
- On Chrome OS, if Play Store apps are enabled, we could share to any installed Android apps.
- Regardless of platform, we plan to go ahead with the proposed Web Share Target API (https://github.com/WICG/web-share-target) that will mean we can share to participating websites from the browser UI.
Whatever we do, we should make sure the behaviour is consistent between the Share menu and the Web Share API on desktop (currently enabled behind the #enable-experimental-web-platform-features flag in conjunction with Web Share Target). So users will have the same share experience whether triggered from inside the page or from the browser chrome.
