Can out-type OS-modal password challenge when showing passwords

Project Member Reported by pinkerton@chromium.org, Jun 28 2017

Issue description

60.0.3112.40beta
MacOS 10.12.5

- have some passwords saved in chrome
- open Preferences
- find and click "manage passwords"
- on a specific password, choose "details" from the 3-dot menu
- in the resulting dialog, click the "eye" to reveal the password
- quickly type your password in the OS-modal dialog and hit return

expected:
- full password is entered and return triggers the default button

actual:
- after about 5-8 characters, new characters stop being registered in the dialog and the app seems like it locks up.
- Pressing return during this time does nothing.
- Sometimes, after a few seconds, more characters appear.

I can repro this pretty easily and it makes viewing passwords rather difficult.

@hcarmona: Can you take a look?

Not able to reproduce this, but the dialog in question is not MD Settings specific.
Are you seeing the same behavior in chrome://settings-frame/passwords?

+kolos & +jdoerrie who work on passwords manager.

Yes I can repro in both.

What I've noticed is that if the mouse cursor is outside of the dialog's bounds, it triggers more regularly than when it's inside the dialog.

The reason it happens more easily in the new version is the different placement of the Show button. in non-MD settings, the show button is about on the screen where the dialog appears on my laptop. With MD settings, the show button is much lower down on the screen and thus the mouse is outside the resulting dialog.

Any update here, this just bit me on another machine while trying to access my passwords. The 30" monitor meant that the cursor was not inside the dialog when it appeared. It doesn't block, but it's certainly annoying.

cc'ing some other passwords folks so they're aware of the impact.
I just tried it on my Mac and failed to reproduce.

- How many passwords do you have? Does it depend on the Chrome profile you use (try a testing one)?
- After you wait few seconds does it calm down so you can continue to type?
- Is focus still in the password box?
I just created a new profile and saved a single password, and it still reproduces.

What happens is that you type a few characters of the password then the OS stops accepting keystrokes for a few seconds, then it accepts them again. The net effect is dropping a few keys. Since you can't see the actual text that's typed, it's difficult to tell if you just mistyped something or if characters were omitted.

However once you know this issue is there, it's pretty easy to observe it in action.
Is it happening on corp machines only? It sounds like there is a slow keylogger somewhere.
Looks like this is OS problem.

Can you make a short video?
Since you won't be able to see me typing on the keyboard and where the keys aren't being accepted, i'm not sure how that would help.

This repros every time for me on my personal laptop. Macbook Air 2010, OS 10.13.3. Happy to bring to the mtv office (johannkoenig@) and show someone.
Can you open the system monitor next to Chrome? Is there any spike in CPU usage or something strange?

Unfortunately, we are in Munich.
I open the input box and enter at a steady pace. You can see it pause after two characters each time. Activity monitor is off to the side. The only apps open are Chrome, Activity Monitor, Quicktime, and Finder.

Not super familiar with Mac so let me know if there is a better thing to show you than Activity Monitor.

Looks like a performance issue. I can't reproduce it on my Mac Pro.
If you go to 'Keychain Access' and try to reveal a password there you'll see a similar prompt. Does it also have the same effect?
I don't have any issues with the system keychain. The reason the cpu is pegged is the screen recording.

My experience is exactly the same as Johann's. I don't think it's a performance issue.
I just updated to a new macbook pro 13 + touchbar for work and this is happening there too. My password is on the long side and I get about 2/3 of the way through before input in the password box freezes. After it fails once and asks me to try again, it doesn't seem to have any problems.
