Latest stable update bricks chromebook

Reported by will.rev...@gmail.com, Jun 27 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS armv7l 9334.72.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/58.0.3029.140 Safari/537.36
Platform: 9334.72.0 (Official Build) stable-channel nyan_big

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. allow chrome os to download new update on stable channel
2. restart acer 13 chromebook
3. totally black screen when turning on. Tried turning off and on again, still black screen. Only fix is to boot to "Chrome OS is missing or damaged. Please insert a recovery USB stick or SD card." screen

What is the expected behavior?
Chromebook boots normally.

What went wrong?
Press power button, blue power light turns on and screen backlight. Screen is still completely black. I can extinguish the blue power light by holding the power button down. If I turn it on again I still get the completely black screen.

Only fix is to hold esc and reload buttons when turning on and to "Chrome OS is missing or damaged. Please insert a recovery USB stick or SD card." screen. I then recover to version 58.0.3029.140 which works ok.

I have recovered twice now but each time the automatic update causes the same problem and I have to recover again.

I now cannot allow my chromebook to restart after it has automatically downloaded the latest update otherwise I will be back to the black screen on startup.

Did this work before? Yes 58.0.3029.140

Chrome version: 58.0.3029.140 Channel: stable
OS Version: 9334.72.0 (Official Build) stable-channel nyan_big
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 25.0 r0

This bug is happening on my Acer Chromebook 13 (CB5-311) too.
Ditto my Acer Chromebook 13 (CB5-311). I've had to do the full recovery twice. Will not apply the prompted update until there is some assurance that this issue is being fixed.

Hi, after reading this comment:

https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/chromebook-central/I0Xo_BvUFWs/-RvplP2TAgAJ

I thought Id try using the 'click arrow to upgrade' option and everything has worked fine; whereas two days ago I received the black screen.

I am now running Version 59.0.3071.91 (Official Build) (32-bit) on my C810-T6YB.

Thanks to everyone for their help and speedy resolution, still loving my Chromebook.
