Waze App opens in web version of Play Store, instead of directly on the Play Store app

Project Member Reported by stecson@google.com, Jun 26 2017

Issue description

Device name: shamu

I've tested on two devices:
a) Nexus 6, Android version 7.0 (not a Googler's device)
b) Nexus 6p, Android version 7.1.2 (my Google work device)

From "Settings > About Chrome"
Application version: N/A
Operating system: Android 7.0 & 7.1.2

URLs (if applicable): See Partner's description below.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Chrome browser on Android phone
2. Type www.waze.com/get in the Chrome browser
3. Waze's listing opens inside the Chrome mobile browser

Expected result:
The Play Store app should launch and the Waze app listing should be shown inside the Play Store app (not in Chrome mobile browser).

Actual result:
The Waze app launches in the Chrome mobile browser version of the Play Store.

Partner's description of issue:

What: in many situations we give URL to users so they can install Waze, but we can't know if they are in Android or iOS. For these cases we've created www.waze.com/get and this should basically redirect users based on their device:
- Android phone gets redirected to the Waze app listing in the Play Store (not working as expected, see below)
- iOS users get redirected to the Waze app listing in the iOS App Store (working well)
- desktop and other mobile OS gets redirected to the Waze website
Note that this used to be our #2 link with UTM in number of installs.

Expected behavior on Android: we want Android users to see the Waze page inside the Play Store app (https://screenshot.googleplex.com/pwevq6NZjZY.png)
NOTE: this worked as expected when we tested it on a staging page: www.gcp.wazestg.com/get which redirects to https://market.android.com/details?id=com.waze&referrer=utm_source%3Dvanity_url%26utm_campaign%3Dmarket_links_test

Currently broken behavior: Android users are seeing the Waze page inside the Chrome browser (web version of Play Store), a much poorer user experience on a phone: https://screenshot.googleplex.com/fm6CXL4TsUa.png
NOTE that in production our www.waze.com/get also redirects to the same page with same syntax as in the staging link above, but it is not working as expected: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.waze&referrer=utm_source%3Dvanityurl%26utm_campaign%3Dget

The fact that this is working in staging but not in production, when both share the same code, is very strange to us.

Hi team.

The developer contacted us with the following message:

"Please note that although we didn't change anything on our side, the links are now partially working -- i.e. when a user clicks in a hyperlink (e.g. www.waze.com/get) it works as intended, at least in a Nexus 6 and Nexus 6p, but when the user types such URL (www.waze.com/get) in the browser, it won't load the Play Store app but just open the mobile web version of the store. Is there anything that we can do to fix that specific case?"

If you have any information/update you can share, please let me know and I'll pass that on to the developer.

Thanks,
Stephanie
So I've done a little investigation, here's what we know:

The links now work because of a related fix that just coincidentally landed shortly after this bug was reported.

As for typing the URL, "https://www.waze.com/get" redirects to https://market.android.com/details?..." which Chrome just sees as any other website and therefore doesn't launch the app.

What can be done as a workaround on Android is to instead redirect to "market://details?..." which will properly launch the Play store app.

Thank you! I'll inform the developer of this and get back to you if they have any further issues.
