r305720 reverted a patch that caused an asan false positive

Let's wait for https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33513 too. Has a tiny upstream regression range, hooopefully some easy revert too.

Yup, I don't have a plan to start the roll, just wanted a bug to track it.

305735 is the mips revert.
