The default search engine choices are an area with complicated ramifactions that limit my ability to speak publicly about this. I will merely say that we have a consistent set of factors that determine what's in the built-in list of options, we've corresponded with DDG about it in the past, and we'll be happy to add them if/when they meet those factors. In the meantime, you can always make any search engine you've used default; the engine should be autodetected and added to Chrome's list of "all engines" on first use.
