Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. I compiled the Chrome OS in Ubuntu 16.10 2. I copied the speech synthesis data files to /usr/share/chromeos-assets/speech_synthesis/patts/ like it would be on a Chrome OS device 3. I changed the synthesis data file's permission and then, unzip the NaCl executables. 4. just run “chrome” as above (out/cros/chrome) and made the ChromeVox enabled What is the expected behavior? I should hear it speak but it doesn't. What went wrong? It seems ChromeVox works and shows the yellow border by selecting different areas and also makes some sounds for opening new tabs, I mean I can hear some beeps when I click around but there is no speech. WebStore page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chromevox/kgejglhpjiefppelpmljglcjbhoiplfn Did this work before? No Chrome version: 56.0.2924.87 Channel: n/a OS Version: Ubuntu 16.10 Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 26.0 r0 Thank you.

The link to the webstore you provided shows Chromevox Classic. This is the old version of Chromevox. Are you sure you are using the latest version? You shouldn't need to install any extension. Have you tried enabling the feature that shows all speech output on screen from the Chromevox panel? If you do this, you will be able to see all speech output without needing to install a synthesizer.

Sorry, the feature that we have only shows Braille output, not speech. I believe it should be an issue with the permissions on the TTS files.

Nektarios, I could fix it with your helpful answer for changing files' permissions. ChromeVox is speaking properly on Ubuntu 16.10 now. Before asking question I used the following code to change the permission, based on the documentation for enabling ChromeVox on Desktop Linux(https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/lkcr/docs/accessibility/chromevox_on_desktop_linux.md): sudo find /usr/share/chromeos-assets -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \; sudo find /usr/share/chromeos-assets -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; but it didn't work. Then based on your answer, I changed the permissions on the TTS files all to RW for user and read for everyone else and also I change permissions of directories leading up to the TTS files to rwx for user and rx for everyone else and then I just restarted Chromium and then it worked properly, Thank you, -Saeid Amanzadeh
