Define behavior when connecting external display in tablet mode |
||||||
Issue descriptionCurrently all displays switches to tablet mode. A few short term solutions: a) Use mirror b) Provide easy way to swap display c) something else? In long term, we need a better story how external display work with tablet mode. Assigning to Omri who is tablet PM.

My assumption here is that the device is still in tablet mode simply because it doesn't have a desktop like input (keyboard & mouse). In that case, please correct me if I'm wrong, but the secondary display doesn't help too much, right? I think this becomes more interesting if you get into a partial input state which we are trying to solve as well.

Playing video, presentation are potentially useful scenarios even without desktop like input. > I think this becomes more interesting if you get into a partial input state which we are trying to solve as well. Yes. What should happen if a user connected keyboard/mouse to tablet form factor is anther question, and do we allow desktop mode in tablet form factor, is yet another question)

Mirroring seems like the easy out here (which still supports important presentation use cases like drawing on slides with stylus). I realize this could create a lot of complexity, but I feel like the bar is different for detachables/tablets vs. convertible laptops. If I flip my convertible into tablet mode, that's a pretty strong signal I want to use it as a tablet (even with external display and external mouse and keyboard). With a tablet or detachable device, plugging in an external mouse and keyboard seems like a different signal (that I want to use it as a laptop/desktop).

> If I flip my convertible into tablet mode, that's a pretty strong signal I want to use it as a tablet (even with external display and external mouse and keyboard). I disagree on that point. Once you have an external keyboard and mouse attached, it's extremely useful to flip the device into one of its tablet formations in order to get the keyboard out of the way. I can't imagine putting my device in that mode with all those external devices connected and expecting it to continue to behave like a tablet.
