Japanese input seems totally broken on 61.0.3129.0.

In Japanese IME, pressing keys on the keyboard seems to just result in direct input like English input: if I press 'a' then 'a' is written directly to the screen.

This bug not repro in the latest version;
Check in v61.0.3147.0 canary ;

Do we know what fixed it? It's still broken for me on 61.3144.0 dev, so it was a patch between 3144 and 3147?
We don't have a Japanese physical keyboard. So I think zhangyu@ just verified it through the on-screen keyboard.

It's likely 2 separated issues for switching through physical and on-screen keyboards.

Reopen this issue to Yingbing for further investigation.

 Issue 739076 has been merged into this issue.
Hey, I discovered if I enable Accessibility -> On Screen Keyboard, then Japanese input worked again. Then if I disabled On Screen Keyboard, it continued working.
So now it's working again.

Somehow I had got in a strange state where it wasn't working and I believe the strange state persisted between reboots.
Hi falken,
What's your chrome os version?
My version is 60.0.3112.50, whatever I restart the device. I can use "~" key to toggle "US" and "JP" state.

For "英数" and "かな" key, since my device is not physical Japanese keyboard. It doesn't has these two keys. I can't test it.

Could you confirm whether "~" works well?
If only "英数" and "かな" key don't work well, I need order a physical Japanese keyboard first.

Chrome 61.0.3144.0.

I don't have a physical Japanese keyboard. It's an English US keyboard. I can use Ctrl+Space to switch between English and Japanese input.

The ~ key does not switch input, but I don't think it's supposed to. It just inputs '`'

Hi falken,
We may talk with different bugs.
Please see crbug.com/739076 for more detail.

Japanese keyboard has special switching logic.
Please select "Japanese Keyboard" and "Google Japanese Input (for Japanese Keyboard)" two input methods.

Then press "~" to switch between them.

For the issue you refer "Japanese not working issue".
Could you delete "Google Japanese Input (for Japanese Keyboard)" and re-add it.
It may solve the issue.

I have a Japanese keyboard in MTV if that's helpful.

Hi Falken,
Could you update the result?
I will close the bug later.
It seems not repro now.
Haven't seen this issue in a while. I could not get back to the broken state after comment 9.
