New tab URL shows up in omnibox autocompletions |
||||||
Issue descriptionChrome 61.0.3124.4 OSX 10.12.5 What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Type "google" into the omnibox What is the expected result? Relevant results What happens instead? The second suggestion is "google.com/_/chrome/newtab?espv=2&ie=UTF-8" I don't think I've ever visited that URL explicitly.

CCing some folks you might be able to guess how that got into your history (as a typed navigation no less)

Sorry, no good ideas. The only theory I can come up with: If you travel to a place with a different Google TLD, then that URL would not be considered the "NTP URL" anymore, so it might end up in your history. But presumably, that wouldn't count as "typed".

lgarron@, are you still seeing this? If so, can you please provide me (mpearson@) directly with your History file so I can see if there is a referrer listed for the visit to that new tab page? Also, does trieb@'s idea in comment #3 sound like something that might've happened to you (switching Google TLDs)?

Shared via Google Drive! > Also, does trieb@'s idea in comment #3 sound like something that might've happened to you (switching Google TLDs)? Possibly. I regularly test with other locales and travel to other countries. I don't recall for sure if either was the case when I filed this bug, though.

This history file shows 29 visits, all typed, and all with transition type 805306369. If I'm doing my math right, this corresponds to PAGE_TRANSITION_CHAIN_START | PAGE_TRANSITION_CHAIN_END | PAGE_TRANSITION_TYPED. https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/ui/base/page_transition_types.h Most importantly, and most troublingly, all these entries have no |from_visit| listed, i.e., no referrer. The omnibox really thinks this an ordinary typed navigation.

lgarron@, I assume you're not actively selecting this URL, right? (I'm curious about the increase in typed visits from 3 when you originally reported this bug to 29 now. Was this caused by you using the suggestion?)

> lgarron@, I assume you're not actively selecting this URL, right? I don't think so. Interestingly, I visited France 2 weeks ago, and I now see the google.fr new tab URL in autocompletions. I'm *pretty* sure I didn't explicitly visit that URL or select it for autocompletion. Any other debugging I can do? Or is there an easy way for me to clear all related data and observe if it happens again?

I'm going to assign this to treib@, as he best might know how to investigate or re-assign this further. It's fundamentally a history/navigation issue caused by something on the NTP. The omnibox is just a symptom. I've done the best I could, now for someone else with more relevant expertise.

By the way, thanks lgarron@ for all your detailed answers!

It does seem to be related to changing TLDs somehow: If I manually visit "https://www.google.com/_/chrome/newtab" (while my Google domain is .de), then that does show up as an Omnibox suggestion. This seems somewhat reasonable. Curiously, visiting "https://www.google.fr/_/chrome/newtab" doesn't seem to make that show up as a suggestion for me. Anyway, the biggest mystery is where those TYPED navigations are coming from. I have no idea about that...

> Anyway, the biggest mystery is where those TYPED navigations are coming from. I have no idea about that... It seems that "google.com" (as well as many of its prefixes) now autocomplete to "google.com/_/chrome/newtab?espv=2&ie=UTF-8" for me. :-/
