UI freeze with touch pen input

Reported by sluon...@gmail.com, Jun 11 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.86 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Use Surface Pro 4 pen
2. Navigate to reddit.com or youtube.com and click around with pen

What is the expected behavior?
Should be able to navigate and click with pen input

What went wrong?
After 5-6 clicks, UI should frozen and fail to recognize ALL type of input.
User will now have to switch focus to another window application for Chrome to resume.

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 59.0.3071.86 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version:

Other type of inputs, such as finger touch, mouse, touch pad... are working fine. Only Pen Input is broken

Thanks!
I have the same issue. The pen somehow triggers the UI to freeze. To break out, I have to use my usb connected mouse. Finger touch doesn't help breaking out of this "deadlock".

Chrome Version: 59.0.3071.86 (64-Bit)
OS: Windows 10 Pro, Version 1703, Build 15063.413
Device: Surface Pro 4
i have this issue also, running dev tools at the same time I can see the browser gets stuck in a loop of
- hit test
- pointer move
- mouse move
- selectionchange
- update layer tree

I get the same problems. Freezes the browser and touch screen too.

We are also seeing some feedback from Surface pro 3 and 4 users about Chrome freezing. Unfortunately we dont have crash IDs in these reports but we have quite a few Forum threads.

Abdul, is there any information we can get from users that might help team root cause this issue ?
Hi,
i have the same problem as above described. There is no crash log or similar, Chrome (59.0.3071.115 (Offizieller Build) (64-Bit)) freezes and can not used a few seconds, after that it starts working again with the "normal" mouse, the pen is no longer accepted as input device. It happens on every website (including this).

Kind regards
Stefan
I have the same problem with my Surface Pro 4 on every Chrome Channel (including the current dev. build).
OS: Windows 10 64-Bit, newest build

Reproduction is even easier than described:
1) mark a text on any website with the pen
2) try to drag 'n' drop the text with the pen
-> chrome freezes.

Using a normal mouse unfreezes chrome and everything works just fine. alternatively, you can try to drag 'n' drop with the pen from the taskbar into the window. The problem is that this happens every single time you try to use the pen with chrome.

Additionally, I heard that the same behaviour occurs on the "Lenovo X220t" which has a similar pen.

Chrome doesn't give me a crash ID to show you.

I found some possibly related things on my PC's:

First I posted this, hoping to provide some more details on how to detect something's wrong or not:
_____________________________
OS full freeze ever since Chrome .115 (multiple Win8.1 PC's).
No crash report, only waiting (sometimes) or hardware reset button. Productivity on multiple workstations (different location, not related to each other) took a full nose dive (because these freezes take at least 20 minutes of my time). Only way to solve until now is to use Firefox.

Signs browser is affected (because I have _some_ systems that are not affected). And also signs it's in the underlying Chromium code, not just Chrome, since Opera has EXACTLY the same problems with the latest update:

- The menu button isn't reacting
- in web.whatsapp.com or web.telegram.org, the conversation list to the left can be clicked, but there's no reaction on the right (conversation should appear).
- in gmail, after a few clicks and browsing, the More button (on top, when a message is selected), doesn't activate anymore.

Sadly, no common factor on those affected and non-affected PC's can be found, other than Chrome/Opera freezing it.
When those 3 problems are encountered, you can be sure it will freeze after a while (unpredictable how long, but the more you browse, the faster it will happen). You can also be sure, a full uninstall (including Appdata/Localappdata/Roaming folders) and reboot, and re-install of the browser doesn't work (the signs can be tested directly after install, and you'll see it's consistently not working).

Hope the bug can be found in the original Chromium code.

Suddenly I read this thread and I see it's more what I'm experiencing. The common thread seems to be pen input for sure!

The three hints I gave, are solved when using mouse or even same tablet, but in Touch mode (use the finger over the tablet instead of the pen).

I only have to check if the system unfreezes if I unplug the USB to the tablet. I will post after I find out.

For me it the bug was introduced only with Chrome .115 (and the latest one or 2 Opera versions).

Comment 20 by kimpu...@gmail.com, Jul 11 2017

Sadly, disconnecting USB (Wacom in this case), didn't solve the freeze (that would be an annoying workaround anyway).

Comment 21 by kimpu...@gmail.com, Jul 11 2017

By that I meant, disconnecting it while the freezing was happening, not disconnecting it to prevent it (all good working chrome/opera pc's have no pen input anyway)

Comment 22 by kimpu...@gmail.com, Jul 11 2017

The guy from https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=739765 confirmed he has pen input also (although not using it). Definitely getting more and more clear (though symptoms and trigger still vary here and there)
I've tried debugging this issue myself and found it's possible to capture with ETW tracing on Windows.

UIforETW does a good job capturing the trace and analyzing with Windows Performance Analyser does confirm the problem is an Input Hang. I did have trouble finding more details as loading all chrome symbols exhausted the RAM on my Surface Pro and Desktop (The processes used about 6GB of ram without loading everything).

If it helps I can attach a trace. I'll have to recapture it since the first one I did had personal information included.
I think it may be related to that WM_POINTER does not support drag-and-drop. Could you please try on the Chrome canary (61.0.3154.0), we disable the drag-and-drop on pen input.

Comment 25 by jotd...@gmail.com, Jul 11 2017

Chrome Dev and Chrome Canary didn't have that problem as of 2 weeks ago when I originally tested. It's Chrome Stable and Beta that has the problem. I re-installed Chrome canary (61.0.3153.0) and the issue of freezing isn't there. I also re-tested on Chrome Dev (61.0.3147.7) and the issue of Chrome freezing when clicking on different links isn't present. There is still no selection possible with the pen as before. Chrome 58 doesn't have problems with both of those issues: freeze on link selection and text selection with the pen.

@lanwei

I tried on 61.0.3154.0 and drag 'n' drop via surface pen is disabled. Also, I am unable to highlight text with the surface pen. Due to that, the bug doesn't occur on that Canary version. Of course this is not a permanent fix, but it looks like you're thinking in the right direction.
I'd hate to pollute the issue with wrong info but since WM_POINTER was mentioned, this thread might be of interest: https://github.com/w3c/pointerevents/issues/212#issuecomment-313548946

I think https://chromiumcodereview.appspot.com/2911413002/ is the fix for this. Lan, can you investigate/confirm and merge this into M60
Thanks all for feedback. Fix has been merged in M60, and we should have this fixed for next Beta push, scheduled for this week.
Awesome - Would drag/drop with a pen work on Windows though?
Blockedon: 724836
So is this just a dupe of issue 724836 (which is already fixed in M60) or can someone here still reproduce an independent issue in current Chrome beta builds?
Switched to Version 60.0.3112.66 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) - freezing is gone BUT CAN NOT select or drag any text. This is making the pen basically useless! Please confirm if this will be addressed.

At this point, I simply cannot use the browser without constantly having to switch back and forth between input devices every few seconds or so.
Spoke too soon - need to add the following issues still present on latest beta:
- Cannot right-click with pen
- Right-clicking (click-hold) with finger touch works when no text selected
- Right-clicking with finger touch causes UI freeze when any text is selected and requires Alt+Tab context switch to make it responsive again.

Updated to beta 60.0.3112.66 with Surface Pro 4.

I can confirm the 1st issue presented in comment 33: Text selection (and drag/drop) doesn't work with the pen.

I can't reproduce any issue in comment 34: Right clicking with pen works and I don't have any problems with finger touch at all. Actually the opposite is true: Chrome has a well designed finger-touch UI and works fine in current beta (on my devices).

Dragging text with the pen doesn't seem like a necessary feature for me (is there any browser capable of it?) but text-selection is an important function on devices like the Surface.
We disabled the drag and drop on purpose, Edge does not support it neither for pen input. We want to make a pen work like the touch input, we will support pen scrolling. We do have a bug that we also disable the text selection, we are fixing it right now. For the right clicking, there is a barrel button on pen, which is set as a right button by default. Pressing it is same as the right click, which can open the right click menu. We are working on to make long press work on pen which should work as a right click as well.

Comment 38 by jotd...@gmail.com, Jul 14 2017

@lanwei, I've reported the text selection bug in another issue# 742373
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=742373.

At least the UI doesn't freeze anymore. You are right that it would be great to make the pen work like the touch input for scrolling as well as going to the previous page or next page!

I can confirm that I do not have the same problems as comment 34 on a Surface Pro (latest gen without a version number anymore) with the latest Surface Pen (again no version) with Chrome Beta 60.0.3112.66.
It looks like the original issue has been fixed, can we close this bug and follow up on the other points in separate issues?
I'm still having pen freezing, highlighting and selection issues. Also no
drag and drop. Was there and update for freezing that I missed in this
thread?

Only for beta build.

Still waiting for the official build.

Yeah this fix won't be pushed out into chrome stable / official build until M60 goes to stable in the coming weeks.

Per #39 removing RBS label, please re-add if there's still a freeze on M60 beta.

This issue will be fixed in M60.

While freezing has been solved, sadly, pen/graphic tablet users are now at an disadvantage (most interactive sites like web.whatsapp.com, web.telegram.org, but really almost ALL websites will have quirks now), as many clicks are not registered anymore. The usage (full pen control, NO FREEZING) from 2 months ago seems like a distant dream now, as it seems "disabling pen support" was the solution, instead of really fixing the bug.

Comment 47 by ti...@getroyer.com, Aug 16 2017

This is not fixed Chrome 60 it broke in this version!

Same issue with Wacom Intuos 4 (PTK-640 A4 size) on macOS Sierra 10.12.6, Chrome Version 60.0.3112.101 (Official Build) (64-bit).

On macOS it started with Chrome 60. Some buttons like the Gmail buttons on mail.google.com (archive, delete, …) don't receive a click event. The button gets the blue highlight around it but never receives a click event.

Same thing happens with the tabs in the Chrome developer tools (Network, Performance, …).

The issue is a bit more complicated. To have Wacom Intuos Pen clicks registered by Google Chrome, the first click in a browser tab has to come from a second device like the magic mouse or a trackpad. After the first click, the Wacom tablet clicks are also registered. This is true for each separate browser tab. Very odd.
Confirm, broke as of Chrome 60 on Mac OSX

Mac OSX (Yosemite 10.10.5)
WACOM Bamboo CRH-670, touch disabled

First noticed on Aug 15, 2017 with Chrome update 60.0.3112.90 (Official Build) (64-bit), did not have any issue before then.

Concur, does appear to start working again if you click with the trackpad and then go back to using pen (both licking and drag and drop.)

For some people, such as myself, using a mouse is not an option. I have been using a pen in lieu of a mouse for 15+ years because a mouse causes me a great deal of physical pain (amongst other reasons). The pen is not a dead tool, please do not give up on pen support!
As per comment #39 I've opened issue 757069 to track stylus strangeness on Mac. Please direct comments there, or star that issue to track its progress.

This issue is driving me insane, I have yet to experience the fix. I have tried chrome/beta/canary/chromium and all display this problem. It also happens on Opera, which leads me to believe it's something Webkit related. Firefox works fine.

Problems that are solved by alt+tabbing
- Unable to scroll using (pen button)
- If something has an "hover" status (eg: mouse icon of an URL) and I set my mouse over it, it will be constantly changing from the "hover" status and the "normal" status (like blinking)
- Trouble clicking things in general (doesn't respond)

Problems that are NOT solved by alt+tabbing:
- Right click does not work (long press)

Windows 10
Wacom Intuos Draw Graphics Pen Tablet (driver: 6.3.23-1)

If there's any information I can provide to help you find and fix this issue please let me know!
