'_metadata directory' causing extension corruption error message

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.36 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
On Mac, Windows, Linux or Chromebook With Chrome 59.0.3071.36 or higher... 
1. Load the Co:Writer extension from the Chrome Webstore https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cowriter-universal-extens/ifajfiofeifbbhbionejdliodenmecna
2. Click on the Extension Icon to bring up the sign in screen.
3. Sign in with...
username: chromium  
password: papaya

Note the extension is removed and the user sees "This extension may have been corrupted."  

What is the expected behavior?
The extension loads properly

What went wrong?
Once Native Client tries to load, the extension is removed and under chrome://extensions/ the user sees "This extension may have been corrupted."  

If the user chooses "Repair" and repeats steps 1-3, the same results occur.  

Did this work before? N/A 

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 59.0.3071.36  Channel: beta
OS Version: OS X 10.12.4
Flash Version: 

This seems to be related to  Issue 643814  

This fails on Beta Channel 59.0.3071.36, Dev Channels 60.0.3088.3/.4 and 60.0.3088.3, as well as Canary 60.0.3093.0

One more note... everything works as expected on 
Chrome version: 58.0.3029.96 Channel: Stable  
(and stable channel Chrome OS).

Thanks for having a look.  It'd be great to get a fix before this reaches the stable channel as many of our users use this extension for  accessibility needs.  

It appears that the hash is indeed is failing once we load NaCl.

Important note: if I remove the _metadata directory from inside the installed extension directory before activating the extension, then it works. On Mac OS X:
