Javascript alert() invisible and hangs chrome on Windows 10 after creators update |
|||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: M58 OS: Windows 10.0.15063 <-- What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Visit https://www.w3schools.com/jsref/tryit.asp?filename=tryjsref_alert (2) Click on Try It What is the expected result? Alert box should appear What happens instead? Alert box is invisible and hangs Chrome till Esc or Enter is pressed by user. Works on Edge, but not on Chrome. Please see screenshot. Forum : https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/FEoxpdyy8EA/PTCBFwM0AgAJ Few feedback reports 1. When a alert, prompt box calls Crome was unresponsive and nothing works on any tab. I have to close forcefully from task manager and restart chrome to work again. Why this problem occurs 2. When Alert Window should appear, it doesn't and the main Chrome Window doesn't respond 3. I have Google Calendar as a pinned tab. When I have an event popup alert, and I am in a different workspace, when I return to Chrome all tabs are unresponsive. If I am in the same workspace as Chrome when the alert happens, then Chrome is brought to the front and the alert is shown, which I can then dismiss (everything works correctly). Works fine for me in Stable-58.0.3029.96, Win 10 and linux trusty. Looks like JS is blocked from the first screenshot(notice an error icon on the right side of the omnibox).Removing RBS, but will keep an eye on incoming bugs as well.

Users also suggest that in case alert is not shown it hangs chrome. Can anything be done about it ? Is there more data that I can try to get from users ?

All reports we have are from M58 and Windows 10.0.15063 (Windows 10 creators update). Could be a co-incidence but keeping an eye on feedback

Thanks for the followup Abhishek. It would be really great if you could collect minidump for browser hang. https://www.chromium.org/for-testers/bug-reporting-guidelines/hanging-tabs Meanwhile I will request the team to try in Windows 10 creators version.

Chrome Forum RS here. Disable hardware acceleration often fixes this issue, so this bug is probably GPU related.
